The Queen And Craft-Work

WHAT CHILDREN CAN DO. Craftwork done by children in the London County Council schools was recently taken, for the first time, to Buckingham Palace, so that, the Queen might inspect it.

Girl of twelve and thirteen have woven expertly the finest silk scar- vos, In colourings of blue shot with lilac, or turquoise shading, to aure, they compare favourably with some of the glorious shot, silks of India.

The embroidery, and sewing are no less amazing than the weaving. The hemstitching on some of the children's frooks would do credit to a professional.

The story behind the exhibition at Buckingham Palace is this. For some years the London Schools' Guild of Arts and Crafts has held an annual exhibition, but each year the Queen has been away at the time. This year the Guild announc ed an exhibition of "Arts and Crafts for the Home" for September 19 Again the date was inconvenient, but her Majesty showed her gener- ous interest by asking that a special representative exhibit should be sent beforehand to the Palace.

The Queen aw in this exhibition in-little metal-work based on the best traditional designs, as well as work in the, modern manner that English children can turn out lovely Seventeenth Century Englab palpit-latch ranged "alongside ait implies of eye and hand trained

Another interesting sewing feat- are is the communal work. A bedspread of silky-fine neutral linen has a central panel of squares Fembroidered, with blue flowers and twining leaves; cach apparently exactly similar, square was the work of a different child. The result is delightfully cool and elegant.

The woodwork whether it be a simple modern clock-case or an ambitious worktable in silky oak, has a professionally finished air.

MODERN ANGELS

I am very amused to hear that the "angel" gowns which were worn at night at Biarritz with small tulle make-up-white face, pale lips and "wings" require a very demure

simple hairdressing. Whoever heard of an angel with blue eyelids, red lips and plucked eyebrows!

MUFFS

The weather is much colder (remarks my fashion expert), but surely it is not cold enough for muffs 7

I saw two very smart Ramanians in a West End restaurant wearing the new shade of green velvet, with big bow pollars of tiger-skin with tiger skin muffs. One woman wore a green velvet "tam," and the other had a "dunce's cap" of tiger-skin -most effective and original.
