KOWLOON JUNIOR
SCHOOL
FIGHTING THE DEPRESSION
Prize-Giving By Mrs. A. O. A Store Old Trader
Brawn
TREE PLANTED IN SCHOOL GARDEN
Mrs. A. O. Brawn, wife of the Inspector of English Schools, presented the prizes at the Kowloon Junior school yesterday morning. She was extended a hearty welcome by the Headmistress of the school, Miss Cooper.
At the conclusion of the prize giving, Mrs. Brawn was presented with a basket of beautiful pink gladiolis by little Marilyn Miners and Alistair Rait.
Before leaving the school, Mrs. Brawn planted a small tree in the school garden as a souvenir of her visit to the school.
衫
Mr. Brawn remarked that his wife ought to know how to plant trees since she had spent four and a half years in the Australian bush.
Miss Cooper the Headmistress, in | satisfied with what I see. welcoming Mrs. Brawn said:
In two or three months, the Headmistress this school, Miss Cooper will be going on leave, 1 hope"she will have a pleasant holl- day. Before she goes I hope that we will welcome back two other members of the staff, Miss Steele and Miss Bennington. It was at this function last year that I wished them a pleasant holiday and hoped that they would not be "pinched" As I have not yet heard of their being "pinched" while on leave, I hape to see them back at the school soon.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome Mrs. Brawn back. after her long absence and we are all glad that she is able to be here and présent our prizes to-day.
The school bas had a good year's work and the attendance has been excellent. The Royal Drawing Bo- ciety's results are especially grati- fying. Bix entered for Division and ten for. Preparatory and all passed with honours. The R.D.S. report reads:"Surface description of texture especially good. Very successful in Division 1 and Pre- paratory."
The new Drill Hall, which we badly needed, has now been erect- ed and the premises have been re- painted.
We owe thanks to the Kowloon Cricket Club for the use of their
gardener to help with heavy work in the school gardens; to Mrs. Hoare who supplied us with seed- lings and gave her valuable advice on several occasions; to the Kow- loon Dock Co, for the use of flags and Mr. Jenner who arranged them so beautifully and to the Committee of the Kowloon Union Church for the loan of chairs and to the staff for their good work during the year.
Mr. Brawn's Speech. Mr. A. O. Brawn, Inspector of English School, in reply said:--

(By Our Special Oorrespondent)
The trade depression seems to have penetrated even the" small corners of the New Territories, That is what I learnt when I went out to Fanling over the week-end ́and picked up a conversation with a shop-keeper, who, to my sur- prise, spoke to rae in fairly good English. He is a fairly old man and his shop is just where the main road branches of to the Golf Club,

I went into his store for a bot- tle of orange squash, and after I had done justice to it, I asked what the damage was, and, my surprise, the old man answered, "that will be fifteen cents, sir.”
I then started a conversation with him during the course of which I learnt that he was from Jamaica. A little over ten years ago, he came to Hong Kong, and as things looked pretty bright for the New Territories then, he built himself a house. kept the top floor us his private and while he residence, the ground floor he turn- ed into a decent-sized Chinese general store.

He had seen so many trade depressions", that he lives in the hope that the present one, like its many predecessors, will not be lasting, and that whatever damage it may do while it is with us, there must be a sliver lining to the dark cloud that is hanging over the world to-day. It was good to see a man like that one who does not grumble for a second at the state of affairs, but one who
