She is cast as the Empress Pop- paea, beautiful but cruel consort of Nero, sixth and last of the Cresurs, in DeMille's "The Sign of the Cross," which opens to-morrow at the Queen's Charles Laughton, Broadway and London stage favou- rite, who made his movie debut in "Devil and the Deep," with sensa- tional success, plays the role of Nero. Frederic March and Eliasa Landi have other leading roles, and nearly 7,500 other persons are mem- bers of the cast.
Miss Colbert went to great pains to secure the role. Competition was strong, for under the new system of exchanging actors recently put in effect in Hollywood, players under. contract to every studio in the film capital were eligible for the role. And even stars fight to get them- selves jobs in DeMille's pictures,
That was part of Miss Colbert's renson for wanting to be Poppaca, The other part, she admits, was that she was tired of good-girl roles. Since her entrance to the movies, after winning stage Buc- cess on Broadway, she has never played a role that called for more mild naughtiness. Being too good gal in her roles was beginning to get on her nerves, she said.
DeMille had interviewed over a score of outstanding women players. when Claudette came along and de- manded 's screen test in the role.
