WELL-KNOWN ARMY HISTORIAN

Cannes, Oct. 23. The death occurred here to-day. of Sir John Fortesque, the Army historian, after an operation.- Reuter:

John William Fortesque, the fifth son of the third Earl Fortes- que, was born on December 28, 1859. He was the noted historian and was librarian at Windsor Cas- tle from 1995 to 1928. Sir John's works are very widely read, his many publications including such volumes as the "History of the 17th "Lancers," "A. Short Account of Canteens in the British Army "Six British Soldiers," ""The Em- pire And The Army," and "His- torical and Military Essays."
