What is a Torch Song?

Everyone seems to know that any one of that beguiled and love- crossed class of women who cries out her heartaches with syncopa- tion is a torch singer." But on the matter of the nature of the song and its origin only contradict- ing, explanations are found.

On the Paramount set. filming, Torch Singer, in which 'Claudette Colbert and Ricardo Cortez are Featured, various theories of the term's derivation are propounded.

The most commonly accepted ver sion is that of Ralph Rainger's, who is writing the picture's music, and who incidentally wrote "Moanin' Low" for "The First Little Show." This piece became the best-know of all torek songs" Rainger ex- plains it is a "lover-come-back- te-me" song, offered by a singer who is supposed to be "carrying a torch in her heart." for the man who set it there..

Going back beyond the advent of "Moanin' Low" is the explanation of another music writer ou the Torch Singer set.
