A Mayfair Notebook

"By Philine

Mayfair has recently discovered that a young woman may be a very import--{ unt person if her age is anything between seventeen and twenty-seven. For then she is eligible for that Secret Society of Youth-the Junior Com-" mittes.

Officially, it is the work of this com mittee to help in the organisation of balls in air of charities. But work is not its only attraction. A round of the most entertaining parties in London is assured to the debutante who is lucky enough to become a member. Her name is automatically added to the invitaion hist of every important hostess.

Charmed Age Of 27

Society women who are still young hut nevertheless over that charmed age of twenty-seven, feel a little re sentful that the highly prized member ship of this Secret Society of Youth is barred to them.

Indignant mothers have been known

to offer donations to charity founds so that their daughters may not bear the stigma of being excluded from the envied circle. But of no avail. Young Mayfair is stern and constitu- tional!

m Expensive" Bridesmaids

Some girls seem to make a hobby of being bridesmaids at their friends. weddings. Bat it is an expensive hobbyfor the bridesmaid's parenta! One popular young lady who has at tended no fewer than seven Society brides during the past few weeks told me that altogether it had cost her nearly £150.

Dresses of Gliss!

The very neweat frock which emos from Paris, is made of glass-exactly the same glass as is used for windows and tableware. It is non-transparent, and the foest possible strands of it are woven together to make a material which looks rather like a beavy glazed satin.

London's first glass gown, displayed to a few select visitors in a Mayfair salon recently, had a wide skirt which stood out stify round the mannequin's lega. It was no heavier than an or dinary dress, and made a delicate swishing sound as the wearer moved.

London, Oct. 10.

SIXTY Chinese students and

The guests were' received by Mr. Su Lee Chang. the warden of China House.

The celebrations will conclude to-night with a "dance at the Hambone Club.-Reuter.

Glass lingerie is promised naxt from Paris. It is made in many pastel colours, as well as in the natural crystal white. French modistes declare that glass wears well, and can be sa easily cleaned as a window. But bow. over long it wears, it can scarcely be RIOTS IN VIENNA called economical, for these glase undies are priced at £50 a set.

Royal Children

The Duchess of York has proved herself, once again, a most admir- able mother and the new domestic law which she has introduced into her Piccadilly, household set an exsinple to parents of celebrated children the world over. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret are tremendous favourites with the British public, and from their cradles they have written aboat and photographed more than any other children.

“Romantic" Hairdressing

Now

If the experts' word is the truth, we are in for a season of "romantio" hair- dressing styles. The shingle and the Eton crap, we are told, bolonged to the unromantic post-war period. debatantes and their young sisters are being encouraged to wear dowers in their hair, in the truly romantic fashion. And the flowers are attached to shoulder-length curls.

At one hairdressing salon I visited recently the younger women were allowed no waves on the top of their heads, the only wave being just over the ears. For older women this coiffeur suggested that curls of hair should be massed on top of the head in Burmese

Her Royal Highness very wisely feels that so much admiring publicity cannot be good for the young Princesses. So aho bas made it a rule that none of their childish remarks fashion. shall be repeated outside their home. Anyone who meets them has to give an undertaking not to describe any. thing they do or asy, even to personal friends. Dancing teachers, dress- markers and governesses, as well na private visitors, are asked to observe this rule.

The early and impressionable years of many a young life might be happier if every mother took this Royal les son to heart. A spoiled child, sur, rounded by admiring friends and relatives who hang upon her youthful witticisms, too often develops into a vain and petted woman,
