MY LIPS BETRAY Lillian Harvey Film
At The King's
No one could help enjoying this light-hearted stuff, with Lillian Harvey, a madcap, but innocent Nell Gwynn, dancing' across stages, through royal palaces and into men's hearts. Lillian sings and acts well, she has Stanley Lupino's gift of comedy panic, but she's best of all as a dancer. She is far and away the best dancer on the films, and, give her a stage, a band, and a cheering crowd, and she rises to quite astonishing heights.
"My Lips Betray" is the story of a girl who is thought to be the King's favourite: How the rumour spreads is another delightful epi-
··sode: grotesque old men and women Jabler at eahe other, doors open.. windows Ry up, fingers are raised, ugly old lips twist into a smile. Maud Eberne,, who models herself
on Marie Dressler, plays the fat old hanidan who exploits the rumour, and Henry Stephenson is the Chan- cellor who smiles and is cynical, while Irene Bendel is the voluble Queen Mother. 'Lillian flits among them, an elusive gamini, who catches the fancy of John Boles, the King.
and all ends happily.
Cheerful nonsence from first to last plenty of good acting: some good work with the camera, and Galsworthy's "Old English."
