London, Sept. 19. Mr. Frank Hilder Pennington, who, when in charge of Earl Haig's advance headquarters telegraph offi. ce, sent the telegram that ended the war, has retired from the Brigh ton postal service, after 45 years as a telegraphist.

The cease fire" telegram, a copy of which is in Mr. Pennington's possession, read as follows:

The North Wales goldfield is. about twenty-five, miles in extent, and lies just north of a lines from Barmouth to Dolgelley.

For 200 years, famous Clogan mine was worked "there, and yield ed more than £1,000,000 worth of gold, £60,000 worth being obtained in one good year.”

From time to time, too, in the last century two or three mines in the Mawddach Valley yielded about £300,000 worth. John Bright once had an interest in the enterprise. MISS LILLAH MCCARTHY.

Sir Edwin Burne-Jones, who was born a hundred years ago this week, prided himself on his ability to read character in the face. In fact he once suggested a revolution Ary method of conducting public trials.

After a visit to the sittings of the Parnell Commission he wrote to a friend that legal testimony did not affect him, as he was convinced that prisoners, and others, should be "tried for their faces.

On that principle, he said, he had spent the time in court settling matters in his own way. "I tried the judges first, and acquitted one, and one I recommended to mercy I have, postponed the trial of the other for further evidence

The enthusiasm she excited in the hearts of the fair South Ameri. eans was doubtless all the greeter for being not merely cultural. For when Lady Keeble was announced before dinner her dress drew from the other ladies the praise due to an obvious masterpiece.

She modestly explained that, it was quite old one of those, in fact, which she had taken with her on her tour.

Mr. Yui in- formed Mr. Fessenden that, in view of the Council maintaining its stand that it must have control of inspec tion of factories in the Settlement, the Chinese authorities would not continue the negotiations in regard to the establishment of a factory in- spectorate in the Settlement. Escaping from prison seems to be an excellent preliminary training for authorship. At all events Me Gore-Browne and Capt. T. L. Hardy, the authors of "The Key," produced at the St. Martin's have performed this exciting feat.

Capt. Hardy, on whose personal CORRESPONDENCE experience in the Irish Trouble" the story of the play is largely bas ed, made six attempts to get away from his prison camp in Silesia during the war before he succeded. His book, "I Escape." is a classic on the subject.

Then he returned to France, lost a leg three weeks before the Arm- istice, sought and found more ex- citement in Ireland, and is now a farmer in Norfolk.
