BATTERY STREET-THE PRIDE OF YAUMATI!
Overcrowding, Dirt And Unwashed Children
(By Our Special Correspondent)
- Some people are never satisfied, and the more they" get, the more they want. Hong Kong people are no exception, and I must confess that I too, am never satisfied with my little lot. If only some of us knew how well off we really are, as compared with the genuinely poor people, we would, perhaps, hesitate before grumbling at the world in general.
A good cure for the discontented would be a visit to Battery Street' in the heart of the "slum quarter in Yaumati. It is highly surpris- ing that with buildings going up, so rapidly in Kowloon, these sorry and shably structures are not condemn ed and pulled down promptly.
but it is by no means impossible, for I am sure I must have seen about thirty people in the flat I visited.
The greatest danger, to my mind, about these houses, is the out- break of one of the more deadly and highly infectious forms of epidemic. There is no fresh air in the rooms, and as the people sleep so close to each other, the pos- || sibility of catching disease is very great. Most of them" sleep in wooden bunks, two or even three- "stories" high, "and they "are put as close together as possible in order to save space. Little wonder them. that many Chinese bables are in such a pitiable state. There I was shown round one of these is no fresh air, and no proper houses by the rating officer in nourishment is given them, for charge of that district the other these little mites are very often left day, and to put it mildly, the sight alone for hours on end while "mother" is busy out at work. In was positively revolting. So that I might see all that is to be sen, my order to keep them out of, worse friend chose 6.30 p.m. as the timemischief, the kiddies are given. for our tour of inspection, for that some sort of food or other, and is when all the people are home this is more often than not the from work, for the tenants of the cheapest kind of sweets or “rub- houses, or the majority of them at bish any rate, are of the coole class, and from the early hours of the morning till late in the evening, they are out looking for a job of work.
Most of the houses in Battery Street are of the old two-storey type, and they are not only badly lit and ventilated, but in most cases. they are, also disgustingly. dirty and in a sad state of dis- repair. Some of the roofs were, understand, leaking badly, and whenever there is a heavy fall of rain, the people living in them get their clothes, and bedding soaked. Neither dirt nor congestion seems. to worry these poor people, for a 'floor is shared by as many as five or six familles averaging about four
told that there were as many as Afty people in a two-storey house. This may sound a rather tall story,

A quarrel over a girl in the Buts terfly Dancing Academy on Friday night ended in a free fight near the Central Market, and but for the in- tervention of a Police Reservist, Mr. Ho Yiu-nam, might have had serious results. which is anything, but good
for them.
So much for the children. Con- ditions are the same where the "grown-ups are concerned, for after a hard day's work, they find it im possible to get any decent sleep. and the result is that on the mor- row, they go to work, only half- rested.
Most of the furniture, including the staircases, is of half-rotten wood, and if a Bra ever breaks out in any one of these houses, the chances are that the whole row will be set alight in next to no time.

THE FAR EASTERN OLYMPIC
Preparations For Manila Meeting
Manila, P.I.
The breaking of more world swim ming records by Japan's youthful mermen is in prospect for the Tenth Far Eastern Olympic Games to be held here in 1934
The Japan Swimming Federation has nominated 14 stars, including 11 who were members of the team which swept the water speed events at Los

The Far Eastern Olympics, open only to Asiatic nations, for years alter their establishment in 1913 were in reality a duel weet between the Japa nese and Filipinos, but more recently the Chinese have been showing to better advantage.
