HOME FOOTBALL NEWS AND FORECASTS

WILL TOTTENHAM FIND SUNDERLAND

TOO STRONG?

ARSENAL MAKES WELCOME RETURN TO FORM

BY "LEFT OUT":

This week should provide some very keen encounters in English football. The greatest attraction being at White Hart Lane, where the Spurs entertain Sunderland. The recent form of the Spurs I imagine to be only temporary, and doubt if it will hold out against the hustling methods of Sunderland. A good match from a football, and spectacular stand- point will be at Leicester where the homesters entertain the League leaders. The return to form, after a bad lapse, of the Arsenal should make them favourites at Blackburn.

WHO'S WHO IN FOOTBALL

All About The Players In The NewsTM

London, Sept. 12

Su Aberdeen have transferrei lack Bettie to Wolverhampton Wanderers after all.

Blackpool did not get him for the simple reason that those who said that he was as good as booked for the "Seasiders" were completely off the target.

Aberdeen directors really put up Beattie for auction just as Airdrieoni ans did with Bob McPhail before that player joined Glasgow Rangers.

Benttie would have made an ideal

Ho" is big,! partner for Thomson: strong, can draw the defence, and delivers the perfect puss.

I congratulate the "Wolves" on a first-cinas capture, just about the best of season 1933-34, and sympathise with Scotland on the loss of a lad who is bound to go to the top of the tree.

Looking back only a few years 1 lind that A berden F. C, have sold more players than any other league clab in Scotland.

See this list:-Jock Hutton to Black burn Rovers, Dougie Livingstone to Everton, Frank Hill to Arsenal, Alec Jackson to Huddersfield Town, Alee" Heid to Preaton North End, Alec Cheyno to Chelsen, Ben Yorston to Sunderland, and George Brewster to Everton, besides a bunch of minor players.

Those named are all'internationals, And I should say that in less than a decade the Aberdeen, directors have taken in transfer less roughly £40,000: Clear, ian't it, why Scottish football is not what it used to be?

I'm going to make what to some people will appear a bold statement. for I'm going to my right now, that Matt Busby is the best right half back in any or all of the four countries.

He's with Manchester City at right halfback, and hir play, is the most polished and most effective I have seen for a long time.

Why Rusly in't capped for his country I cannot understand, Jimmy Gibson, Aston Villa is a good friend of mine, as his father Neilly was -before him, but that cannot stop my Baying that Bushy is a more effective player than the lanky Scot at Villa Park.

McMullan's Discovery

Of course, Buzby is a Scot. He was discovered by the great Jimmy McMullan, now managing Oldham Athletic. Matt was then with Denny Hibernians, Jinny's old junior club in Stirlingshire.

He was then an inside forward, and went to Maine-road as such. He was not a success, And I was one of his severest critics. He always played too much to the middle, and generally got in the way of Tait, then being tried at

centro.

"Then he was played at right half in an emergency in a Central League He shaped exceedingly well. game. He was tried in the same position again, and was even better than on the first occasion.

I am told that Middlesbrough are now one of the clubs taking more than a passing interest.

Well whoever gets him will get a good'un, although he is so small. Fanny Walden, now a cricket salut was small, Alan Morton, now a club, director, was small.

Both depended on sheer cleverness, and Foulkes has that commodity in bagfulls.

But he has more; he is brave as an an- gry buffalo on the trek; robust atten- tion has no terrors for him.

I haven't seen him this season, but last term I saw a back deliberately tread on the little fellow's toes and lig him more than once in the ribs, but Foulkes couldn't be knocked off his 100 per cent. game.

This Castleford youth-he's touch- ing just 20 years now-had a short term with Euddersfield a couple of seasons ago, but was given a free transfer. Cleni Stephenson and his directors "held the view that Foulkes was too small and too light. (He's only sit. 6ia and weighs 8st. 6lb.) and gave the player his freedom gratia

But Foulkes bad confidence in him- self. He believed he could play foot- hall, but he had difficulty persuading other people that that was 80.

After hawking his football ability for some time without success, he turned up at Stockport.

They offered him a month's trial, but showed no enthusiasm about it. He told them he didn't want a month's trial, he wanted to sign for the season, In the end they came to terms and well, haven't they just rubbed their hands ever since.

Clem Stephenson silmits he made a mistake. I admire him for his courage in open confession.

I didn't think much of Foulkes when I saw him first. I thought a whale of a lot of him when I saw him last, towards the end of 1932-33 season and I'm told he's playing better than ever this term.

Might have been A Villan Gravenor, of Birmingham. has been twice inspected by the Arsenal.

|

He may land at Highbury, but I would not be too hopeful if I were an Arsenal man..

Thomas Grosvenor, who figures re- gularly and with striking success in the position of inside right in the Birmingham cleven, is young. Perhaps it is best to leave a player's actual age out of story, bit Grosvenor has youth on his side and should have a folg period of success as a footballer, before him.

A finely built young follow, he stands oft. and weighs 11st. 4lb. There are those who say bluntly that Grosvenor us not quite fulfilled his early promise. That is a hatter of contention, clearly.

It is quite true that he has not opened the season in the storming form he exhibited at times last season.

Grosvenor does not like a militant

McGurk learned to be a miner as well as a footballer, and although only aft. 7in in height is nevertheless a

Aberdeen very difficult winger for the most Clyde powerful defenders to hold in subjec-

tion.

Experts north of the Tweed tip him for an international cap before very long

Unfortunately, McGurk got a nasty knock in the game against Everton, but it is to be hoped that he is as right us raín again.

I expect to hear very soon leGurk and Grosvenor spoken of as just about the best wing pair in the country. Make a note of this.
