Splendid Effort at the V.R.C. Last Evening: Record Unshaken

CAMPBELL TO SWIM IN HALF MILE TO-DAY

(BY

WATERMAN"}

A great attempt to lower the Colony's record for the 440 yards free style was made by L. Roza Pereira last night at the Colony's Swimming Championships. Pereira kept a very good pace throughout and finished full of go ing, but he was still a matter of sixteen seconds behind the best swim seen in the Colony-that of J. R. John- stone in 1929, when he returned a time of 5 minutes 32.2 seconds.

In the open team race, the V.R.C. won by a length from the Chinese Athletic Association who were 2 yards

ahead of the Club de Recreio..

The Races.

The programme opened with a afty yarda handicap for boys under twelve years of age, and the event fell to R. Marques', who won it in 38.4 seconda, swimming $ beautiful stroke throughout. Marques is a promising young swimmer of whom more will be heard when he gets older:

The "440."

L. Roza Pereira, W. Lawrence, EL B. Roza and Gar. Ellington started in the 440 yards. The an- nouncer, Mr. W. Butt, stated at the commencement of the race, that W. Campbell, through slight Indisposition was not starting, but was reating himself for the 880 to-day.

Pereira and Lawrence stayed together over the Arst 100 yards of the race, when Pereira drew abead and finished the distance in convincing style. It was touch and go whether he would smash the record and had there been someone to pace him, he might have. As it was be returned the time of 5.48.2 seconds.

Lawrence was a good second, finishing within 20 yards of Pereira, and Ed da Roza was third.

FAST WORK AT THE

COURSE

Trentbridge's Impressive Gallop Under Mr. Heard

There were some very fast gallops at the course yester- day, one of the most impressive performances being that of Mr. Pearce's Derby winner, Trentbridge, who was taken oat over a mile by Mr. Heard. The pony finished in 28,4', seconds over the last quarter.

Hetman also did a very fine gallop, finishing in 28.4. Woodland Stag, went over a slow mile and although he registered 29 seconds for the last quarter, did not look too well. Portia, on the other hand, went very well indeed and put in a splendid finish.

Valorous galloped strongly and Mayflower, also, im pressed. Melody was taken out over a mile, travelling slowly for the first three quarters, but he finished very well indeed, He is due, for a win shortly.

Daylight Eve and King's Justice also looked as though it would not be long before they will make the acquain tance of the judge.
