ECHOES OF 1859

4. Before the Days of the City Hall

JANUARY 13, 1859.

The officers of the garrison gave a most charming theatrical enter- tainment on Tuesday evening. The scenery, the dresses, the band, and the whole arrangements reflect greatest credit upon the good taste of those who had charge of them. The house was full and highly der lighted, which leaves little more to

be said,

The first plece was one of Char- les Matthew's farces, "Cool as Cu- cumber.". We dislike these farces: A piece without a plot can be made effective-but a far fetched plot seems to us to be the "fabric of a dream," sach improbable in- cident causing a halt. These farces of Charles Matthews Bre mere vehicles for illustrating "points." Viewed in this light the omcers of, the garrison were most success- ful The Cool overpowering. im- pudence and stolid offensive, as- surance of "Plumper," overwhelm- ing the steady man of the world degree occasionally. but still made many good hits Some of the young Goddesses in the Seminary were midshipmen in short petticoats, who danced as if no one was looking at them. When they shall again be cast adrift un- | der similar circumstances we sug- gest that they should be well trou- sered down to the knee like opera dancers, so that they can safely kick up their legs as much as they please.

We think it a pity that the building had not been constructed in the shape of a horse shoe árið atted with boxes. It would have cost little if any more, and would have been far better.keep
