F.M.S. MISSIONARY TEACHERS

Drastic Salary Cuts To Operate In January

SINGAPORE, Sept. 16. Drastic cuts in the salaries of missionary teachers in the sided schools of the Colony and the F.M.S. are suggested by the Educa tion Department, and will probably come into force in January next year. The revision is in pursuit of the policy recommended by the com- mittee appointed last year by Sir Cecil Clementi, Governor and High Commissioner, to consider the sys- tem of granta-in-aid to schools.

The question of grants-in-aid was debated shortly in the Legisla tive Council at last year's Budget meeting, and on that occasion Dr. Noel Clarke, himself a prominent educationist, said, in commenting, on the expenditure proposed by the education department. the grants

in aid should be carefully scrutin ised and such posts ns Supervisors in aided schools should be consider. ed as to whether they are to be re- tained or not. The salaries scheme for Misaonary teachers should be reconsidered and revised and it would be more astisfactory to consi- der separately the salaries of auch teachers in each individual. school than to adopt-A fat rate for all Missionary teachèra.”
