DEATH AT LAI CHI

KOK GAOL -Diseased Man And Opium Addict

The recent death of a prisoner at Lalchikok branch prison form- ed the subject of a formal enquiry at the Kowloon Magistracy · yes-- terday. Mr. Wynne-Jones sat as Coroner. assisted by a jury com- posed of Messrs. H. M. Marshall (foreman), J. N. Grant and Fung Shin Wa.

Dr. J. H. Uttley, medical officer in charge of the Laichikok Prison stated that prior to July 13, deceas- ed had been at Victoria Gaol where he had been treated for opium-smoking.

Dr. J. B. Mache of the Kowloon Mortuary who performed the post- mortem said that he considered death was caused by heart failure caused by deceased's syphilitic condition.

Chief Warder E. Barrett stated that deceased's hard labour took the form of washing the clothing of the other prisoners. He had never made any complaint.
