DAY OF GOOD DIVIDENDS

BUT NO SURPRISES

"

(By MORNING. DEW")

The Macao races "yesterday were held in glorious weather and the bright sunshine at the course made the heat somewhat oppressive during the afternoon, but in spite of that there was some very keen racing.

Messrs. Frost and Deitz, both took part in the day's racing, the former winning two races and the later one.

The Machine Gun Troop races were quite interesting, the dividends being very gratifying.

Miss Scott Harston won the Ladies race where there were only three, starters.

The prizes at the conclusion of the sports were given away by Madame Miranda, wife of H.E. the Governor of Macao.

AFRICAN EVE ROMPS HOME

African Evé was by far the best thing for the first race, as he look. ed a picture in the paddock and 25 he was taken out by Mr.". Charles, who certainly is the best jockey among the Machine Gun troopers. The pony led from start to finish. Red Leaves Anished second. coming up beautifully in the home straight. Jan Stewer and Mouche were prominent most of the way and in a close duel for third place, Mouche just won!

The Ma Kau Siac. Plate. Prestwick with Deltz up) was a hot favourite for the s.cond race. but after running neck and neck over the major part of the race with Blue Plane (Frost up) the ропу wеnt under in the home straight by 2 lengths. Jingo was third and the rest of the field well strung out.

The Novices Race. After an absence" of many months from local racing "Jackie" Noronha, requiring one more win to get out of the novice class. started in the Prala Grande Handl- eap over six. furlongs on Golly Eyes. He was unable to get the necessary win. Snappy Eve led from start to finish and won by PE many lengths Bold General was prominent most of the way and finished a good second. Much Ado was third and The Raincoat and Snappy Eve brought up the rear In that order.

M.G.T. Scurry,

In the scurry over half a mile for "B" Class M.G.T. panies, White Label ran strongly in the finish to win the race from In- .shallah, ridden by A. H. Potts, who sent his mount into the lead early on. The Goods ran "quite well all the way and was a good third, be- ing only a short head behind In- shallah at the finish.

Mong Ha Handicap. 非 There were Ave starters in this race over once round for "D" Class ponies, and Adam (Frost up was made a red-hot favourite. He took the lead from the start and was held all the way on the rails with the rest of the field of five alongside him. He won easily from Powerful King and Ajax. Cebu, ridden by, Delta, was second fav- ourite, but disappointed.

The Areta Preta Handicap. Bold Lad started a warm fay ourite for the Tix furlongs race for Macao subs, but had to be satisfied with second place, as Norman Defts steered Carnation II. in to win by a length and a half. Mr. Chanson on Bold Lad lost many lengths when the pony taking the bend behind Carnation, swerved widely. By the time he was righted the leader was not. more than fifty yards from home and still a couple of lengths to the good, which proved too big a tásk for Chanson's mount. Jackie (Laing up) was third.

Apparently the promoters this delectable resort have taken the

precaution of providing against fire, What forethought! And their wisdom has been justi- ded. In a few minutes play was once more in full swing,

coins clattering mainly from owner to owner. But for the foresight.of the promoters only charred ashes might have greeted seekers of fortune on Sunday morning. A tragedy worse than Ella's phantasy of roast pork has been averted!

LARGE PAPER FACTORY

GOOD SEND-OFF FOR NEW

DEPARTMENT STORE

Just before noon on Saturday, Queen's Road Central reminded one of the good old days when the Chinese Fair was held in that quarter of the city, for it was packed with hundreds of sightseers." The occasion was the offi cial opening of the China Emporium, the latest addition to the Colony's up-to-date department stores.

The ceremony was performed by Sir Shou-son Chow, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and within a few minutes thousands of people, foreign and Chinese, poured into the building, anxious to see what the interior of the premises and the stock were like.

Guests present to wish the Emporium success included Sir Henry Pollock, the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall, Mr. T." E. Pearce, Mr. A. Kern, Mr. C. Little, and many pro minent business men.

After Sir Shou-son Chow had declared the building open, Mr. W. G. Felshaw, on behalf of Messrs. Little, Adams and Wood, architects of the building, presented him with a silver cigarette case, suitably inscribed, in hon- our of the occasion.

said:--

Sir Shou-son Chow, As you all know, there are already several other departmental stores in different parts of the Colony, but the locality we have chosen is, we think, one that serves a large nec tion of the community and is parti cularly convenient to residents of the Middle Level and the Central part of the City.

It is true that Hong Kong, like the rest of the world, has not escap ed the depression, but we have no to be pessimistic. World economic problems will find a solu- tion sooner or later, and it is only a question of

time when Hong Kong will regain its former pros perity.
