That country has a population of about 12.002,000, and is well disposed towards Japan For the future development of trade between the two countries, the Japanese Government and people must try to gain a more intimate knowledge of that country. At pre- sent, the Japanese residents in Siam
number only 300. In any descrip tion of Siam, the influence of the Chinese merchants cannot be left
out.
The Chinese population in that country is assumed to exceed 2,000, 000.
The annual Siamese trade shows a favourable balanes of Y50, 000.000 but the farmers. who co- stitute the major part of the Siam- ese population, live on advandus from Chinese merchants. It may
