Gallops In The Slush
SLOW TIMES ON HEAVY GOING: AUSTRALIAN PONY DESTROYED
(By
MORNING. DEW" ··
Despite the heavy rain at 5:30 am yesterday, there was a large gathering at Happy Valley to see the training gallops. The rain held off between 6 and 730 and all the ponies were taken over their work, but conditions underfoot were not conducive to fast work. Mayflower did one of the most surprising gallops of the morning and others which impressed were Bistre, Warrington, Gay Butterfly. Burgomaster arid Blue Star.
יו
Owing to the slippery condition of the road," an Australlan pony, one of the new batch, slipped on his way from the stables to the course and injured himself so badly that he had to be destroyed. The pony, it is 'learned, broke loose from the Mafoo and in running away slipped and was injured internally. He was bleeding profusely from the mouth and after examination by the "vet" was killed. The pony was a chestnut (No. 14) drawn by Messrs. Lewis and Tinson.
