The Stranger's Return This is one of those close, intimate studies dă ordinary lives that King Vidor can do magnificently, and it is not just the farm sounds off screen, and the realistic chores of cooking, charning, dish-washing. that bring his Middle West homestead to life. He knows how people act towards one another ander ordinary.couth- tions as well as in heightened emo- tion, and he knows-which is raver the pace to play that action The scene of the reapers' supper should go down into history with his river! scene from Bardelys The Magni- ficent" as a superb example of technical timing-working ravenous ly up to its climax of repletiou, and resolved on a glutted laugh.
The playing, and direction of the play ing, is so good that you feel the seductive swing of Miriam Hope kins's body, as a moment when the senses should have been dormant, as a kind of savage, shock. Thore are not many films in which, one false movement becomes remarkable, and the few that there, are, are worth a considerable effort to see.
է:
My Lips Betray. Lilian Harvey's first film in. America was originally titled" His Majesty's. Car," and the change of title seems rather un- necessarily unkind. The present Lilian Harvey is no different from the German star from Muswell Hill who collected bouquets, all over Europe; she does her old stuff just as well as ever." But for once in their history the American technical experts have slipped, up over the exploitation of a star. The camera- man, Le Garmes. who knows just what to do with the lighting of a staircase and can make the stream- fines of a motionlsss car exciting, has not been able to isolate the charms of the Harvey face, while the sound-crew have been peculiarly unselective. The film itself is mo delled closely en German musical comedy lines, and presents the es- capades of a cafe singer who is quite innocently taken to be the king's mistress. The situation is ingenious and the treatment light-handed; only it seems a little odd to show Lilian Harvey doing badly all the things that for years past she has proved she can do so well.
Mama, Loven Papa.
This rather unengaging title conceals 11 comedy of ernest auburbanity that is quite first- class entertainment for most of: its length. Mama and Papa are middle-aged and kindly and happy in their ineffectualities; Papa pan- ders to Mama's yen for culture, and Mama still laughs admiringly at Papa's little jokes. All goes well with them and the film until they také a header into high society; then fun and observation go to the wall Luckily, the society sequences are short, and the laughs many and long. Try it.
