As we draw closer to the Race Meeting interest in the perform- ance of the candidates becomes keener and Wednesdays and Satur- days at the course in the morning draw bigger and bigger attend- ances. That there are going to be a few upsets is certain. since the latest training performances reveal many changes in form. One of the most improved animal on the first half of the season's form is Gold Key. The pony is looking much "better than it has ever done, and may easily account for some of the more popular candidates.

Juniors
The Craigengower's Junior team will have to pay more attention 10 their game this week end if they are going to win the championship of the junior division. They are meeting the Civil Service on their own ground and provided they can win that match they will secure the Championship. If they allow the Civil Service to win, then a play-off with the Bowling Green will be necessary, and the odds are that in that case, the Kowloon team will walk away with the match.

London, Sept. 23. The Royal Navy gained a big over the Royal Air advantage Force in their annual match at Lord's yesterday, scoring 344 runs in their first innings and dismiss- Ing eight of their opponents for 180. Two ane batting performan. ces were accomplished for the Navy by Commander R. J. Shaw and Sub-Lieutenant M. R. The Navy won the toss and bat- Com- ted Arst on a fast wicket. mander R. J. Shaw and Major R. A. D. Brooks gave their side a capital start, the former, full of confidence inspired by his century for the M.C.C. on the previous day, attacking the bowling fiercely from the first over. The two fast' bow- lers. Pilot Officer W. E. S. Tanner and Flying Officer G. P. Longfield, were quickly knocked off their length, and 70 runs were made in the first three-quarters of an hour. "Although it is now fully a week since Hyde Lay defeated Luz in the finals of the Singles Cham- pionship, this happens to be the first, opportunity that I have had of congratulating the K.C.C. player un his splendid performance. He played a level headed game and the importance of the occasion did not once tell on his nerves, as it obviously did on Luz, who gave about his worst display this season. They say that the standard of play at a final never reaches a high mark, and this was certainly true of this year's finals, since both players appeared distinctly off. In

I have stressed that this is a wholly amateur competition because I understand that the members of the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association are not likely to compete in the forth- coming sports. If this is so, their attitude is difficult to understand. as the V.R.C. sports are open to all and are strictly non-professional. They are promoting amateur swim- ming, and there seems to be 10 reason why an amateur association should see anything to object to in such a meeting.
