HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY,

ECHOES OF 1858

65.—Sir John Bowring Reaches Manila

December 14, 1858. Sir John Bowring arrived at Manila on the 3rd instant. Not one word is said about his sick- ness. He was intensely disgusted at there being no arrangements made by the British community for his reception. No message from the Consulate, nor deputation from the merchants. He is of course' residing with the Governor, which | is 'more than he deserves, for several "governors of Manila have had to put up at hotels here dur- ing Sir John's administration, in the same manner as General Garrett had to do.

December 16, 1858." Having been favoured with a full and literal translation of that portion of "El Commercio" dated 8th instant, relative to Sir John Bowring'e reception at Manila" we give the same word for word as we received it that our readers may see we are taking no liberties with the Joke. We shall attempt in a future number of furnish this in the shape of a street ballad.

On the morning of the 4th; December, at to 12, a salvo of artillery, announced to us the ar- rival of HB.M. str. "Magicienne," on board of which was H.E. Sir

"At 4 p.m. a chosen body of the 9th Infantry, with a flag. received at the wharf this illustrious guest. who had apartments prepared at the Palace of HE. the Captain General, by whom he was received with the most sympathetic and cordial greetings."

Later in the day he rode out with HE. on the public drive."

"This morning at, past 8, H.E. inspected the sugar factories, and also the tobacco stores and press,

WELCOME TO MR. AND MRS. Y. LEE

Entertained At Y's

Men's Club

The Y's Men's Club of Hongkong held its monthly dinner on Thurs- "day evening a the University Club in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Yinson Lee. There waï a large gathering of members and friends to extend to a most enthusiastic welcome "At 12 noon. HE was waited upon by a commission from the the guests of honour who are stop different branches of the garrison.ping over in Hongkong for a few to congratulate him on his ar- days before returning to Shanghai, rival."

after their honeymoon trip to Foo- chow, Amoy and Manka.

We find that the Manila Editor is not so far out as we supposed. Sir John admitted himself one day, that he had been a wine merchant in Spain during the Peninsula War. It is well-known that he is by no means a con- noiseur in the article, nor does he indulge either himself or his guests with those descriptions of the grapy Juice, which a wine mer- chant would who had been over- taken with the honour and titles he now finds himself possessed For "wine merchant read of. "keeper of a canteen "-then all discrepancies

reconciled and probabilities arrived at. 1 this be the case we should not at all be surprised to find that his known aversion to military rule arises entirely from having had his back scratched during his service in the Peninsula, for selling bad

quors.
