SIR WILLIAM HORNELL
The Scout

Sir William Hornell who paid a flying visit to England during the University's summer vacation, re- turned to the Colony this week, looking as hale as ever. Speaking that cruelty to a slave girl is not at the Rotary Club on Tuesday, Sir William told the members that things were "bucking up" at Home

of the Colony. Professor Gerrard was another member of the Uni- versity's staff who was at Home during the vacation, and it is in- teresting to add that he “attended Sir Robert Ho Tung during the lat fer's recent niness Ti London,"
HONG KONG'S KNIGHTS
When Sir Thomas Southorn, Bir William Shenton and Sir Robert Ho Tung arrive back from abroad, Hongkong will have a total of seven knights. Sir William Hornell's return to the Colony brings the number now in the Colony to four the others being, His Excellency Sir William Peel,. Sir Henry Pollock and Bir Shouson Chow. The departure on retire- ment of Sir Joseph Kemp deduced the number of Knights by one and it will be interesting to see which of Hongkong's residents will be the next to receive this honour.
BISHOP HALL
There was a very large gather- ing at St. John's Cathedral last Sunday to welcome Bishop Hall and to listen to the first of his series of sermons on "How to read the Bible." Bishop Hall's popular- ity in the Colony is not difficult to understand and he commands the respect and affection alike of the European and the Chinese com- munities. A Chinese admirer of Bishop Hall told me the other day that he found in the Bishop an "earnest and devoted worker who radiates the practical idealism of his religion. Bishop Hall recently made a tour of China to get ac- quainted, with the people to whose spiritual welfare he has dedicated his life.

Many Beauty Sports Defaced
London, Sept. 7.
stretches of MANY beautiful *country have been defaced by the disastrous heath fires which broke but in Surrey and Hamp- shire two days ago, and are still spreading..
Strenuous exorts are being made to keep the outbreaks under, by the digging of trenches and the employment of all available men in beating out the fames, but as fast as one blaze is subdued an- other breaks out elsewhere.
Only a heavy downpour of rain will relleva the authorities of Sur- rey Hampshire and Kent from strict vigilance.
Further fires broke out to-day in various parts of the. Downs, and caused considerable damage.
The troops have given invaluable services in fighting the flames and both aeroplanes and wireless are being employed in keeping track of the outbreaks-British Wireless
