NOTES FROM LONDON AND PARIS

Beach. fashions have become so grand that designers are spending almost as much time on them as on Ascot frocks and wedding dres-

sea.

The newest news comes from America. It 15 "black linen." Smart New Yorkers are sunning themselves on the Long Island bea- ches in black linen frocks this year. These are often backless and have shoulder straps or tie- around necks, and New York has "gone clean crazy" over them.

Plain Beach, Frocks Black linen may sound rather dull, but the effect against sun- tanned skin, if the decollete is low, is good. Some of the most attractive advance models I have seen at London shows were beach frocks in plain navy blue stockin- ette. with low “sun backs and no trimmings.

Pastel Accessories

If your frocks is black, your nat, bag, and beach gloves (yes, gloves are worn on all the best beaches) will be in some light pastel colour. Pink, blue, corn yellow, or pale green, as you like. Women who do not care to wear black next, to the face can throw a pastel. coloured scarf round the neck of the frock, but the frock itself must be an "all-black."

Stripes Advance

Stripes material is a good second choice for accessories. Well-dress- ed women are taking more and more to stripes for seaside and town. Queen Maud of Norway was wearing a finely striped frock when I saw her in the Park Lady Hor- ridge wore stripes at the races. and there were lots at Ranelagn.

Marlene's Influence

Beach trousers have not "gone up in smoke" as many people said, they would when the beach skirt arrived. But they are changed. They have gone Marlene Dietrich. Much narrower, straighter, and more like a man's flannels: Bo '11 you like the trouser habit for the beach, take some along with you in your suitcase. You will not look out of date if the legs are nar- row.

These new, straighter trousers have matching Jackets. Perhaps they are still thinking of Mar- lene's suits. Wool stockinette is a pupular material, and striped cot- ton shirts are matched up with the sults. These have the high neck fashion to which so many smart Women have succumbed, Helen Hayes and Tilly Losch among others.

String Time

If you are not yet brave enough to wear, black linen on the beach then you must have something string. A belt, a beach bag, or a knitted

string bat. String has come so far forward into fashion that it has gone into the weaving business, and now, there are "string materials."..

These details have been collect- ed for me by my fashion corres- pondent in Paris.

SUN-TAN MAKE-UP. Stains, as a rule, remain fast when once, applied, but the creams can be removed at will, so it is Just a matter of personal choice which you use.

Special make-up is required for a sun-tan, and there are lovely shades made to go with it. Dark bronze powders, bright lipsticks with 筵 touch of geranium orange, and, rouge to match, all give a lovely glow to the cheeks and the lips.
