ANOTHER NORMAN

MYSTERY!

WILL DOLLAR AND STERLING BE STABILISED?

“TEA-PARTY” TALKS MAY INFLUENCE MR. ROOSEVELT

New York, August 29. "The object of Mr. Montagu Norman's visit, continues to evoke lively speculation, while it is dismissed in some quarters as just another mystery of Mr. Montagu Norman.

Banking circles stress that Mr. Norman's visit is not purely social as he is believed to be convinced that sterling-dollar stabilisation is essential to world recovery,

While official circles emphasise the tea-party talks do not imply any immediate change in the American finan- eial policy, Mr. Norman's visit will possibly influence Mr. Roosevelt's future policy. Mr. Roosevelt is not likely to commit himself to any fresh monetary policy until the results of the Recovery Campaign are available. But it is believed Mr. Norman will orge a measure for the tem- porary stabilisation of exchanges to help rather than hin iler the recovery movement in the United States.

A very strong warning was, for instance, delivered by the New Zealand Finance Minister. Mr.

Downle-Stewart, who in a striking speech, declared his conviction that unless immediate steps were taken to create a peace machinery, there was grave danger of war.

Tentative plans for the forma- tion of a Pacific Socialist organi- sation, sponsored by Lord Snell, the well-known British Labour Feer, were submitted to the Con- ference with the object of further- ing the movement for a League of Pacific Nations in order to ensure peace and to solve mutual econo- mic problems.
