LEICESTER'S IMPRESSIVE WIN: RELEGATED IST. TEAMS LOSE

7.

The Home football season started on Saturday in time honoured fashion, no less than fifty-two teams being. engaged in English and Scottish league fixtures.

That the season promises to be full of thrills' may be seen from the fact that upsets were not slow in com “ing, quite's number of favourites being unpleasantly sur

prised in the opening day.

Last year's champions, the Arsenal, were expected to have" Blackpool no difficulty in starting off with Bradford a win against Birmingham who occupied thirteenth place in the Icague table at the end of last

little difficulty, in accounting for the team representing England in the International Lawn Bowls Final played on the rinks of the Club de Recreio yesterday.

"

There was a very large gathering of bowls enthusiasts to watch the match, which began with things go ing alt in favour of England. The Scottish tearn however, pulled them- selves together and forging ahead at the ninth head, was never over- hauled again, keeping the English players ta hay all the way.

The English side was represented by H. Hampton, B. W. Bradbury, F. Cullen and A. W. Grimmitt (Skip). Scotland was represented by A. Hde Lay. J. Chalmers, W. Mair and J. C. Brown (Skip).

Civil Service by virtue of their victory over Craigen- gower C.C. on Saturday have qualified to meet the Kow- loon Bowling Green for the premier honour in the senior division of the league. Civil Service played a much bet- ter game than they did a fortnight ago, when they went under to Craigengower on the latter's. ground. Omar's rink had some difficulty in playing together as a team and was more or less responsible for Craigengower's defeat. The play-off for the championship will take place on Saturday on the Recreio green.

In the junior division both Craigengower and the Bowling Green' went under, losing respectively to the Police and Electric. Their defeats, occurring simultane." ously, make no difference to the league standings,
