CHOOSE YOUR SURFING-SUIT
The most important part of surf-kit is the shoulder straps. If they step you will lose a lot of spread when you have to adjust them--and if you don't adjust them they will irk-which is even worse! One never sees a massed bunch of blossoms in a vase, but each bunch spray or branch has a dis- tinctive line of it's own. This is achieved by patiently drawing the I stalk over and over again between the finger and thumb until the desired curve is obtained;" or, in the case of a branch, it is cut to a sufficient depth to allow of a "wedge being inserted which keeps it at the carrect angle.
This wedge' is made a piece of the branch itself and fts so per- fectly that it is almost impercept- able and in no way impedes the suction of water up to the flower or leat.

Training A Baby To Sleep All Night
Being up and about at nights is had enough, heaven knows, but be- ing up and about, the next day is ten times wörge,
,,
For at night we should sleep, which means that we deliver our tired body up to the hands of the repairers.
While we sleep, "a vast organi- sation within us is ceaselessly at work, repairing the havoc, the wear and tear, that has occurred the day.
Damaged tissue cells are repair ed and made as new, dead cells of and replaced, stretched muscle bres are given a chance to re- gain their nozmal tone.
Good Babies And Bad No wonder then that when these processes are interfered with owing to disturbed nights, we feel the wreck that we look, that indeed wa
are..
Baby, often the immediate osuse. of the trouble where mothers are concerned, is a wreck too, a fact which he generally emphasises by following up a bad night with a bad day as well.
Now, every baby which is thriv- Ing and well-managed" will sleep from 8.30 p.m. until 5 or 6 a.m. without a single. noticeable break, except when he wakes or is waken- ed for his last feed.
I say without a noticeable break because I believe that all bables wake two or three times in the night; the difference between the "good" baby and the other kind is that the former does not cry when he wakes, while the latter does.
So it amounts to this, that "if your baby sleeps badly he is either not thriving or he is badly mam- ged.
Which is it?
You can easily decide that by overhauling the baby, seeing that he is putting on weight regularly, that his skin, clear, and elastic and that his muscles are firm.

Before you leave Baby have a look round the room. Does the sun shimmer on the ceiling above his cot? Is light reflected from a mirror or picture to his face? Does a window rattle or a curtain flap? No? Then leave him, At 10 p.m. baby should not be fully wakened. į

Any attempt by father to turn this into a playtime should be No father definitely squashed. with any sense would attempt to do this, but there are the others.
Baby's 10 p.m. change and feed being over, he is put back to bed, and mother steals quietly from the room. ||
This bring us to another point. Whenever possible, baby should sleep in a separate apartment, by. himself of with a brother or sister, but not with mother.
I have already mentioned that bables always wake two or three times during the night. Now a young baby knows, by his olfac tory sense, when his mother is in room. So when he wakes up he endeavours, if she is present to at- tract her attention by the only means in his power, namely, cry- Ing. Otherwise he gets bored and goes off to sleep again.
It's Up To You
If baby does wake and cry at night, what do we do? The mini- mum. We wait for a minute or two to see if it is a real storm or whether, it will blow over without

That Dreadful Dis-
sipated Look. "
"I love all the fun in "August." writes a young reader of our page, "but late nights always give me such a dreadfully dissipated ap- pearance next day. Then my skin quickly, becomes greasy, and my eyes lose their shine and by the end of a week I'm not it to be seen,"
This is a problem that troubles quite a lot of people in out East, What is to be done about it?

Then, we get up and see what is the trouble. We may change him, give him a little warm water, and turn him on his other side, using the dimmest possible light.
Then we leave him. This is our most important duty.
We do not feed him, party. be- cause a baby adequately fed by day (by sure that he is) does not re- quire feeding at night, and partly because night waking is a thing you can have or not at will; "en- courage it and you have it, dis- courage it and you do not.
