"A WOMAN COMMANDS

This picture, at present showing at the Central Theatre, is one that can be strongly, recommended. The leads are well played by Pola Negri as Maria Draga, "Roland Young 48 the King and "Basil Rathbone, as Capt. Alex Pasitsch.

The story is taken in Serbia and Pola Negri plays the part of a cabaret girl who is loved by Basil Rathbone. This is his undoing as he incurs heavy debts in keeping her in luxury. Then he is sent to an outpost where there houses near so that she is unable to follow. When she hears of his debts she sells her jewels to pay them, and returns to her cabaret where the King falls in love with her. At last as she will have no- thing to do with him he propOGLE marriage and she accepte after be ing insulted by Basil, who has in the mean time returned. "

The fall of the monarchy and rise of the revolution led by Basil turn it into a very fine show.

Pola Negri, while she was in the cabaret, sang the song "If I Could Hold Your Hand" and very well too. She bas & beautiful voice which this song gives full scope for her to show off.

The acting throughout is very good and Roland Young is at his best as the King. Rathbone makes a very handsome Captain and plays

a dificult part with his usual superb style.

Although Robin Hood probably neven lived at all, he has been a ymbolic hero to millions," says Fox star. The moralist deplores the modern tendency to glorify the outlaw, but overlooks the fact that it is not the outlaw's criminality, but his defiance of organized in- justice and tyranny, that wins him admirers.

"In the good old days, a knight who decided things weren't going properly, climbed on his horse and went around adjusting them. To- day the average man cannot get into his liver and go about slay. ing dragons and rescuing beleaguer- ed damsels, but the urge to do so still exista Our boasted civiliza- tion is by no means perfect, and until it is, this occasional impulse of wrongs to be righted will always remain alive.

"But since economic and other conditions prevent this average man from being another Robin Hood himself, the next best thing is to enjoy the spectacle of some one else championing the oppressed. Here the Western picture especially meets this demand. Whether its hero be an honest man or an outlaw, he is presented as waging a single-hand ed fight against injustice and evil in some form as the champion the spectator would like to be if he could. And consequently such pic. tures have a wide following.",
