THE GREAT FIRE CONSPIRACY TRIAL
LONGEST EVER HELD AT THE OLD
BAILEY
WITNESS FOR PROSECUTION ATTACKED
London, August 17. "Described by Mr. Justice Humphreys as." almost the limit of human endurance," "the great Fire Conspiracy Trial, the longest ever held at the Old Bailey, has entered upon its closing stages,
After six-and-a-half weeks heuring, in which enquiries were made into the complicated details of fourteen different fires, the Judge has begun his summing up which is expect- ed to last until to-morrow afternoon after which the Jury will return their verdicts.
A featuro of Mr. Justice Humphreyst address to the jury was the strong attack on the chief witness for the pro- secution. Mr: Capsoni who was referred to as a blackmailer" and a highly dangerous criminal, though the Judge added that it was impossible to prosecute him.
ง
His chief regret was that he was not able to pass on Capsoni the sentence he so richly deserved.
It is estimated that by the time, the proceedings are over; they will have cost £50,000 the fees for one counsel alone, together with refreshers," is understood to amount to £5,000 while there is the cost of 200 witnesses to be met. -Rester.
3.
It will be recalled that a sensational development in the great fire conspiracy trial at the Old Bailey accurred on July 18, when Leopold Louis Harris, a fire assessor, whom the prosecution had described as the "head of a fire-raising gang," pleaded "guilty" to nine charges of arson and also some other charges.
He and another accused, Louis Jarvis, who also pleaded guil ty" on certaia counts," were allowed bail of £90,000 each.
Four others pleaded guilty during the course of the trial, leaving 10 who pleaded not guilty" still on trial.
