Markets this morning showed signs of steadiness at the lower levels reached in the past day or two, which seemingly are, proving attractive to both investors and operators. The steadiness referred to appears to be more pronounced in Star Ferries, Electrics, Tele phones, Hong Kong Lands and Dairy Farms. Lower down, the scale, the smaller issues "such as Cements and Hotels, were dealt in both cash and forward, on slightly higher basis than the clos- ing rates of yesterday.

"Tokyo, August 6.-Japan's for- eign trade for July totalled. Y.299,- 548,000; Y:158,368,000 in exports and Y.140,080,000 imports, showing a favourable balance of Y.17,586,000, according to investigations by the Department of Finance.
Compared with the corresponding period of last year, exports repre- sent an increase of Y.47,779,000 (43.1 per cent.) and imports Y.72,- 827,000 (106.9 per cent.), resulting in an increase of T120,606,000 (67.4 per cent.) in the total. The excess of exports over imports a year ago was Y.42,638,000.
Classified, raw silk exports, at Y.43,172,000, show an increase of Y. 20, 850,000. Exports of cotton tissues, canned goods and porce lain increased Y2,445,000. Y.1,852,-. 000 and Y.1,467,000, respectively. Rice and four other minor items re- corded slight losses. As regards
the import, trade raw cotton, at 1.51,488,000 indicates an increkee of Y.31,970,000. Tron, machinery and beans dropped Y.8,120,000, Y.3,396,- 000 and Y.1,986,000, respectively. Rice, woollen yarn, woollen tissues. and ores dwindled lightly.
The excess of imports over ex- ports since the beginning of the year is now 7.183,880,000 as against Y294,135,000 for the corresponding period of last year.
