Havana, August 13.

Doctor Cespedes, Y. Ortiz, Minister of Education, has been declared provisional President, all political parties having agreed to his selection as successor to General Machado.

Colonel Antonnin Jimenz, Chief" of the dreaded Secret Police during the Machado regime, was shot dead by sol- diers after he had wounded one of the demonstrators who were celebrating Gen. Machado's retirement.

HEAVY CASULTY LIST

Havana, August 13. Twenty-one were killed and 2,000 injured during" the disturbances, the police and military taking no action to maintain order.

The private houses of General Machado and his sup porters were sacked by the mob after their owners had fled to hiding. The furniture was hurled onto the streets, whilst valuables and clothing were looted.

Havana, August 13.

A salute of twenty-one guns signalled the approval of the Cuban Army of the appointment of Cespedes Y. Ortiz as pro- visionul President.

The downfall of the Machado regime was celebrated by wild excesses. The mob sacked the Presidential Palace and killed at least five members of the Secret Police.

Meanwhile, General Machado has fed to his country estate where he will be heavily guarded.

The General Staff bas ordered the Army to patrol the streets in an effort to establish order.

Communication with the interior of the island is cut off.
