Had the shade of Byron been, among his follow Old Harrovians at Lord's on Saturday, he might have remembered those fines from the second canto of his "Don Juan," for there were no fewer than half-dozen young women joining in the interval-like Haidee-stock- ingless.

Their frocks, while in keeping with the eartorial standard of the famous cricket ground, made no secret of the fact that the wearer's legs, were bare Nothing of the -kind had been seen there before.

But Mr. A. G. Macdonell, author of England, Their England," a best-selling satirical study of this country and its institutions, labels the English public school system, in the following article, as the strongest union of all.

In what, then, do we public school men excel, if in anything! We excel in the art of being a Conservative back-bencher."

SHORTS ARE IN FAVOUR THIS SEASON

SPORTS CLOTHES.

Tennis dresses are now smart enough in detail to look as well off the court as on. The side slit') skirt, that sometimes shows a con- trast in an inset pleat, is attrao tive" and sensible, and the same. applies to a button fitted skirt. Either can be worn over" "sharta " to match. It is doubtless very con venient to discard the skirt for "short" during a strenuous seta of tennis. The smartly tailored slim jacket that is such a favourite for the golf course is also attrac tive in linen for termia and the river. Also for putting on after the game are double breasted wool coats in bright colours. Linen is amart this year. White and green, or white and red are the colour alliance for tennis and sea. Brown and beige are pleasing on the golf course. Shoes are highly specialis ed. For tennis and golf there are models in antelope, canvas or soft leather. For hot days the antelope **perforated shoe and sandals appear with the cottons and linens, and pique gloves. The height of the heel is all-important. The square low type does not appeal to all, and there are many grades of cuban heels which are comfortable and practical. The best shoes are, not too elaborate. Stitched kid, in: plain or in contrasting colours, is much worn, but with real -sports clothes neither shoes or gloves. should be too decorative.

LONDON TO HAVE "GREEN GIRDLE"?

CUTTING THE PROFITEER- ING ON EXPANSION

Sir Hilton Young, the Ministe of Health, referred to the possibi lity of providing a "green girdle" round London,

He emphasised the importance of acquiring open spacca sarly, so as to avoid grest expenditure when values rose through the growth of Satellite towns."-

Sir Hilton was dressing the first meeting of the new Greater London Regional Planning Committee,

The committee, he said, would have to consider the problem of the evolution of the garden city or the satellite town and the provision of open spaces on the outskirts of London.

Why Not in this Growing City. We learn that, Landlords who have land on the New Reclamation in Wanchai have the same idea, and are beginning to wonder what ther it would not be a wise move to ask for some trees to be planted at the wide street corners

The Chinese (who make up the population of this new district) are famous for their love of "Bowers and greenery, and will pay higher rents to live in roads which are planted with trees

The association of old shoes with wedding festivities is probably of mixed origin. The shoe in ancient times was a symbol of possession and authority, as the Psalmist had in mind when he song of casting. his shoe upon Edom Its transfer was also a method of confirming an exchange, as we read in the Book of Ruth.
