FEMALE COOLIES
The women counterpart of the coolie class are as hardy as the In addition to looking after the family she has to cook the meals and mind the baby" and do all the household work and find time to give eight or ten hours a; day to a contractor who for thirty to fifty cents gets quite a lot of work done
Women are employed, as will be seen by any observant person, on all kinds of hard work. Breaking stones in common occupation. When stones are blasted from a hillside they fall, in big chunks. These have to be hammered into small pieces and mostly women are employed for this work
SERVANTS
The servants employed in local also among the households are poorest in the Colony. This is not true of houseboys and amahs in European households and in the families of the richer Chinese, but those who work in the hopes of the poorer classes of Chinese are no, better off than the coolie woman- cum-labourer.

Their money, which they have to supply their own clothing, cloga and other neces- sities, do not allow them a very big saving Most of these people remit to the country what little they can save. These remittances are made in a very primitive way. Several amabis hand their savings to one who is going back to the country. Each one will have some instructions to give to the carrier and the confusion that arises is easier imagined than described,
Their hours are very long. Vary soon after daylight, in summer and winter, they leave their homes to go to their work. Those with small babies, generally strap them on their backs and for the day the child will remain in that position. There is an interval of one hour allowed during the whole day's work and in that hour the child will be fed. As to the woman 'her self, she takes a heavy meal before leaving for her house early in the morning. Such a thing as lunch is unknown, but a cup of tea and a. bite of coarse cake is taken during the interval between the working hours, and that will be the only thing a coolie-woman will eat until she returns home, where a proper meal is cooked and eaten. There is no such thing as a holiday or Sun-class go to a home where a bed- day. The only time when there is any chance of resting without the prospect of losing employment is on the festival days.
