CITY AND THE W.E.C.

LONDON, July 11. The Economic Conference faded as a factor in City affairs quite carly in the week. President Roosvelt has adhered to his former policy of allowing the dollar free scope. The revaluation of the dollar in terms of American com- modities," he said, is an end from which the Government and the people of the United States cannot be diverted."

This policy has led to frantic dealings in the dollar exchange The part the dollar has played in the rise in stocks and commodi ties can be seen in a comparison of the week's highest level of 4.75 with that of roughly 3.50 ruling before the dollar abandoned gold. The present depreciation from that level is approximately 35 per cent. Practically one-third of the fall, as can be seen from the following table, took place, during the past week.

HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH

ORDERS

Though the completion" of the Grid “has caused a decline in de „mand for certain products used in its construction, it has automati cally stimulated the demand in other directors. Thus, at yester day's meeting of W. T. Henley's Telegraph Works Co., Sir Mou- tague Hughman, the chairman, pointed out that ample additional supplies of power from the Grid would shortly be available, and that the electric supply authorities were alive to the fact that the time

favourable to increase their underground distribution network, Of this incrasse Henley's should, of Business abroad was naturally course, obtain a fair share, restricted, but in spite of many obstacles to overseas trade, Sir Montague detects signs of revival, At home, he stated, business" has” shown a substantial increase, and orders for the three months to June 30 were higher than for the corresponding period a year ago.

Por of opinion has swung round strong- ly in favour of the gold currencies. Dealers were overwhelmed in the uncertainties of the market.

Sterling was also a sufferer in this hectic market through Con- tinantal selling, due to the fear that as the gold countries failed to capture the support of the £ in the recent currency discussions, sterling may eventually throw in its lot with the dollar. The Ex change Control is reckoned to have liquidated substantial frane bal ances in holding the French rate from sharp depreciation. Rates on other gold centres, lowever, moved sharply against the pound.

Another important point in the exchanges 19 the full in the Canadian dollar to a discount against sterling.. The Canadian currency which moves with the American dollar has accompanied the latter in its depreciation, and the Canadian exchange now stands well over the old gold parity level.

tagia Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. We think the market has acted very well and it looks as though most of the liquidation resulting from last week's break has been cleaned up. We do not think we will! get a secondary reaction in the immediata future. Wheat; A farther deterioration in the Canada crop induced new buying in Winnipeg and Chicago Millers are also buying. Cotton: This market felt the influence of the additional rains in the Central Belt, which aroused further and increased weevil infestation and brought new investment buying. Silver: Dull and featureless, except for a tendency on the part of the Trade and banks to buy at any signs of weakness, Busines Done: 8,040,000 shares.
