London Scottish Route March: The Lion Rampant And St. Andrew's Cross: Royal Scots And The Princess Royal Wedding Of

Lady Helene Hay

(Special Air-Mail Servion)

LONDON SCOTTISH IN EDINBURGH

LONDON, July 4. When the London Scottish reach- ed Edinburgh at the end of their route march of 125 miles in Cen- tral Scotland on July 29 they were met by an organised body of representatives of the old mem bers of the London Scottish now resident in Edinburgh. The appeal of the Scottish Old Com rades Association in Edin burgh has met +with respones, and Colonel E. D. Jack son, who commanded the "regi ment during the war, is taking the keenest interest therein, The chairman is Mr. Wilham Whyte, deputy general manager of the Royal Bank of Scotland. The route marches of the London Scottish in Scotland were instituted in 1898.

THE FRENCHMAN'S FLAG

Although the lion rampant flag has its admirers and supporters in the claim of its representative character, one of my readers de- otares that it is really symbolic of a foreign intrusion in Scotland. King William the Lyon, who first introduced it in his coat of arms

ás clar from being a popular monarch, and was nicknamed the Frenchman" because of his strong Normaa sympathies.

A PATRIOT'S SYMBOL On the other hand, the St. An- drew's flag symbol dates from the eighth century when it was' adopt ed by the Celtic king, Angus whose name clings to the county of Angus. St. Andrew was in his reign recognised for the first time as the patron saint of Scotland. F Angus subdued Argyll and included it in his county, and he endeavour. ed to unite all Scotland by con quering Strathclyde.

GLASGOW'S SUBWAY Evidently the electrification of Glasgow's underground railway is going to involve a greater upheaval and a larger expenditure than was at first contemplated. The présent platforms and stairways do not meet the requirements of the Ministry of Transport, and they will have to follow the melancholy moving rope to the scrapheap to make way for modern structures. But if the service can be made more attractive to travellers, and thus more remunerative, the city should not grudge the expense.
