TWO CENTURIES FOR

WEST INDIES

GOOD START IN THE SECOND

TEST

HEADLEY AND BARROW IN

DASHING FORM

London, July 21.

The second Test match between England and the West Indies opened at Manchester in sunny weather, and on a perfect wicket. The crowd, however, was on the small side, only 6,000 people being present to see Douglas Jar. dine, the England skipper, losing the toss.

As was announced earlier. Clark, the Northants speed merchant, replaced Bowes who had to withdraw in the " -eleventh hour due to a strained muscle sustained in an

earlier game.

Roach and Barrow opened the innings for the tourists and gave the impression that they were going to settle down to some pro- 1fe scoring when at twenty-six one of Clark's inswingers took Roach's wicket, the out-guing bata- man having just reached the un Jucky 13,

Headley fled the breach and soon settled down to play pretty cricket. At lunch these two bats eu were still going strong, Barrow Chaving collected 49 and Hendley 33. Three extras helped to bring The total to 08 For 1.

Interest Increases.

After lunch the crowd of 6,000 swelled to 15,000 and the specta tors were treated to some delight fully free cricket by Roach and Hendley who did not appear to have been put off by the break for Juncheon. When they had taken the score to 220 for 2, Barrow was bowled y Wyatt for 105 runs-the result of attractive innings though he offered a few chances which went a-begging. He had been batting for 235 minutes, hit nine boundaries and helped to put en 200 for the second wicket.

Meanwhile Hond joined Headley but immediately after he had broken his duck" he was howled dry Clark-927 for 3.

Grant was given a great ovation when he walked out to join Headley "but ho wis not' destined to stay long and when he had made but 16. he was taken behind the sticks "off Robine-286-4-18.

Constantine was next man in and with him and Headley together, Home sparkling cricket was seen. When he had got 31, however, rhe Rave a difficult chance to Robins (at slips) off Clark and was given marching orders.

Wiles" Duck."

Wiles joined Hendley who was still going strong but the new- comer disappointed, for, nibbling st one from Verity, he was chught by Hammond at slips before he had opened his account.

Da Costa was next and he played, cautiously. When stumps were drawn he had scored 16 while. Hoadley, with 145 to his credit, was

still undefeated.
