BATHING BEACHES AT NORTH POINT

GOVERNMENT MAY RESUME SITES: JOINT PETITION FROM CHINESE

BATHING CLUBS

ELOQUENT PLEA ON BEHALF OF

SWIMMERS

(SPECIAL TO THE ** DAILY PRESS**)

امي

Seven Chinese bathing clubs will be effected if the rumour that the Government intend shortly to resume all the bathing sites at North Point is correct. The officials of these clubs are very much perturbed by these insistent rumours and through the Unofficial Chinese members of the Legislative Council, have forwarded a petition to His Excellency the Governor asking that these sites be left to the Chinese clubs in order that they can carry on provid ing bathing facilities for "the thousands who are now using the beaches daily.

Con

A question with regard to the Government's foreshore and Seabed Works Ordinance, which probably bears this question was asked on Monday in the House of Com mons, and the matter has also been dealt with by the Chamber of Commerce, whose observations are also given below:-

Many interesting points are contained in the petition, some of which are set out below:-

The only possible healthy re- creation for the majority of the focal residents during the six hot summer months is to go to the above beach for swimming picnics or for a change of air.‚Ït is for tunate that the tram service be tween Western Market and Shauki- wan has made the bathing pavil. lions there easily accessible sou very popular. Should these pavi lions be moved to a remoter locai- ity, very few people could afford to swim on account of the higher Car fare.

During the season, about 10,000 people visit these pavilions daily, many of them being children and

good number are clerks who work from 8 to 12 hours a day. These would be deprived of an immensat benefit if these beaches were available to them.

001

Moreover, it ir argued, swimming has proved to be a effective safeguard Lgainst pulmonary tuberculosis in the congested part of the Colony and consequently every facility ahould be afforded to promote this recreation.

A list showing the number of people who visited the various bathing Clubs during 1931 and 1832 is appended from which we give the following figures:-

QUESTIONS IN HOUSE OF COMMONS

LONDON, July 18.

It is an essential part of the curriculum at English schools to learn swimming, Local schoolboys learn their swimming at North "I am perfectly certain that the Point, mostly and these would be Hong Kong Government has deprived of their swimming if no intention of using the Bill for they had (1) to go a long distance any revolutionary purpose," declar (2) pay a high car fare.

NEEDED FOR INDUSTRY?

Chinese representatives to the Far Eastern Olympics have often boen chosen from Hong Kong This is undoubtedly due to the fact that facilities to learn swim- ming are so abundant here.

The Chinese Clubs have spent no less than $180,000 erecting semi-permanent strpo tures, and if the sites were re- sumed by the Government, it would mean, in addition to the lows to the public, a substantial

loss to the Club concerned

ed Sir Philip Cunliffe Lister in the House of Commons this afternoon.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies was replying to questions by Mr. Wardlaw Milne, who has been showing marked interest in the Hong Kong Foreshore and Sea Bed Works Ordinance...

Eir Philip Cunliffe-Liater stated that as a result of correspondence with the Governor (Sir William Peel), certain amendments had been made to the Ordinance and the matter was, still under con. sideration.

He added that the Bill for General Powers was, subject to very special conditions regarding

It is the intention of the Govern WHAT THE ORDINANCE ment, it is supposed, to sell the land along the above beach for building workshops and

The Ordinance provides powers houses. But under the present to take over reclaimed land for conditions, Shai Wan, Aberdeen, public works and the Colonial Aplichau, Cheung Sha Wan, Ngau Secretary's Office states that its Shi Wan and the strip of land chief purpose was to permit the along Castle Peak Road are more Government to resume marine land than enough to meet the demand for public purposes without being for the desired purpose. The annual Crown and Boateds Ordinance is designed rent, is at the rate of 5 cents per to obviate delay, and "expense. square feet, both for the pavilions and the matabeds. Hence, From thla point of view, the preservation of these pavilions seems quite justifiable.

MAIN SOURCE OF RECREATION

Another paragraph points out that these bathing pavilions pro- vide more recreation to the Chin ese community than the play. grounds provided by the Govern- ment.
