Japanese art of this kind affected European artists of the nineteenth century, Whistler, in particular, more profoundly than did that of China. But that was because in Whistler's time Japanese art had just been discovered in Europe and Chinese art, which is superior, was unknown. If Whistler had drunk from the wells of China instead of Japan, his art might have been less transitory.

All this predicament is attributable to the fact that the currency problem, the pivot of the agenda of the Conference, has reached s deadlock, for which rea ponsibility attaches to America, who put a spoke in the wheel of preliminary stabilisation talks. Allowance must, however, be made for the awkward position in which America is placed in regard to her domestic administration. She is obliged to sacrifice currency stabili. sation on the altar of the inflation policy which has the forcing up of prices for its objective. So long as there are some countries which are on gold and the others off it, this is the obstacle which cannot be hoped to be removed.
From the Partridge exhibition 1 pick put only a very few of the 114 pieces, because they seem to mo to be the most typical each in n particular sense, in the whole col lection, and the most representative of the spirit of Chinese art.

London, June 29. Three years ago Miss L Bronow ski, of Rookwood-road, Stoke New- ington, N., was playing tennis and netball for her school-Clapton County Secondary School,
To-day it is announced that ahe is the only woman this year to gain the distinction of Cambridge Wrangler.
There is nothing of the dry-as- dust, high-broved mathematióian about Miss Bronowski, who is just 7. She is petite, dark and attrac tive, and can talk of everyday affairs as well as the Theory of Numbers, with its obstruse rela tions.
The news of her remarkable success reached Miss. Bronowski at her home. She took it calmly, and already she is planning the future. To an Erening Standard represen tative she said:—
Naturally, I am delighted to have done so well. My gratitude is due especially to my mathe matical mistresses at Secondary School and the former .Clapton headmistress, Dr. O'Brien Harris.
"Now I want to go back to Câm. bridge and continue my mathe matical work by research into the Theory of Numbers. I should like to tell you the line of research, but that would take too long."
