The wieken had been only slightly affected by the rain, and the Mid-A.. dlesex bowling rarely rose above medicarity, so that it was largely as a result of their own carelessness that the visitors failed to make the game as even as their performariee of Thursday seemed to promise.
Young, as it in protest against the triumph of such mediocrity, batted attractively for about an hour and a quarter, but he found little support, and after he left at 83, as the result of a brilliant one- hand watch by Robins, the remain- ing two wickets could only add 9

Batsmen in Trouble.
Sumerset were early in difficul- ties. Luckes, who had been sent in Ag cannon-fadder" on "the pre vious evening, received some pain. ful blows from Durston before giv ing a catch at short-leg, and J.W. Lee could only subscribe one run before playing on to Durston. F. S. Lee was bowled a little later by a fabulous leg-break from Robins, to which the batsman did not even deign to cover up, and, with four wickets down for 99, Somerset were in a serious position...
Longrigg and Young half-stemmed
the tide of disaster by adding 60
runs for the fifth wickets, but both Longrigg and Ingle lost their wick- ets before lunch, and the innings Came to close about twenty minutes after the interval.
д
Middlesex, with 83 to make, start- ed rather badly, losing both Price and Lee for 6 runs, Sims and Hulme, both promoted in the bat- ting order, faced the task of scor- ing 50 as if it were some grave Herculean labour, and runs came very slowly indeed.
They did come, however, and when, in the 60's, Ingle saw, that the end was near, he brought on Case, whose three overs yielded both a refreshing clement of comedy and enough runs to finish the match be- fore the tea interval.
