More Local Industries

in Trouble

MAKING OF ELECTRIC TORCHES (From. Our Own Correspondent).

Canton, June 20. Another local industry is stated to be facing difficulties. This is the electric torch manufacturing busi- ness, which has been established in the city for several years. As in many other new industries, there was a period of phenomenal success in the initial stages, with the result that too many factories began to be put up. Competition is one of the factors contributing towards the present plight. Another reason, perhaps the most important one, is stated to be the fact that the boy. cott against Japanese goods has deprived manufacturers of the supply of cheap materials with the result that cost of production has greatly increased.

"Fears May Be Liars."

Fear of sea-sickness kept Mr. Walter C. Artz at home for seventy years.

Mr. Artz has just crossed the Atlantic from New York,

"I just could not face it," said Mr. Artz, who is now in London, "but I had to come and I was about the only man in the boat who was not sick."

More Bottomley Stories.

The death of Horatio Bottomley has called forth a host of ance dotes about various phases of his career.

Bered by Tiger Hunting.

Arranging tigor hunts is one of the duties of the Nawab Mahdi Yar Yung, of Hyderabad, who is now in London.

He has organised thrills for scores of distinguished visitors to Hyder. bad, where he is a member of the Executive Council,

While Even the seven years sentence did native kerosene pil distillers, the he was in gaol he met an old torch manufacturers are also tak-financier friend who had spent & ing joint action and addressing an appeal to the authorities for pro- fortune on horses and who was now tective measures to be made for clipping some grass in the prison their industry. It is understood one grounds: and Bottomley exclaimed of the proposals submitted by these "Ab, still on the Turf." manufacturers is that no new far-

tory should be allowed to be estab. lished in Canton city for the next five years. Exemption from mis- cellaneous taxes is also asked for for the local products.

Fire Crackers.

The depression in the fire eracker business in Canton is of course not of recent date. While fire-crackers used to be one of the principal commodities exported from the city, in late years much of the business has been transferred to Hong Kong and Macao. But the position is now made worse by the increasing restrictions on the product in the countries which are the chief con

sumers. The bad state of affairs is teffected in the fact that when the local authorities invited not very long ago tenders from intend ing farmers for the tax on the manufacture of fire crackers in different parts of the province, no response was received. The Goy-
