A considerable sum of money bas been, and is being, diverted by the Government in the form of various payments, bus with the economie depression still acutely felt in many phases of industry, the de mand for fresh funds is very small. The money then goes to banks, and is glutted there, Another remark- able fact is that, taking advantage of the easy money market, many industrialists issue debentures and return their obligations to banks. The only outlet which banks can seek to-day is investment in bonds. and other securities. It is expect ed that the above situation will rander it imperative for banks to effect reduction in interest on de- posits after July,

Aggregate deposits, according to the statistics, were Y6,232,975,000, an increase of Y146,948,000 over April and Y709,722,000 over a year ago. This is the highest on record.
