TRENTBRIDGE WINS THE HIGHEST STAKES
REVIEW OF FIRST HALF OF RACING SEASON: SOME INTERESTING FIGURES
SEVEN RECORDS LOWERED: ONÉ EQUALLED
(BY." MORNING DEW "')
A very excellent half year's racing has just come to a close and looking back, one cannot help being impressed by the excel- lent performances that have been put up during the period, under review by China ponies. Four new records have been established during the past five months and the standard set by the record holders is so high that it may safely be said it will be a long time before these performances are improved upon.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is drawing more and more support- gra to its fold. The sport, finds a large following from all actions of the community, and those who do not take active part las owOSIS. or jockeys are no less interested' in the fate of the candidates and keenly follow the undercurrent of friendly rivalry between, the various stables and jockeys,
In all 141 official racen were held at Happy Valley during the five-day annual meeting and sight extra race meetings. No fewer that 1,225 China ponies and 178 Australian ponies faced the starters in the various races, while 49 jockeys in all took part in the sport...
Mr. L. G. Frost and Mr. A. 3. P. Heard are at the top of the list of successful jockeyá at the close of the first half dề, the gasson," Mr. V. V. Nesda was the most successful of the riders from Shanghai for the Annual Meeting, riding the Derby winner, among other mounts.
CLOSE RIVALRY AMONG JOCKEYS
Mr. Needa stayed over in Hong Kong for some time following the Annual Meeting and by his success and brilliant riding made himself very popular with owners, jockeys and the public alike. We look for- ward to his next visit to Hong Kong.
Mr. A. J. P. Heard has shown by his successes that he is still as good as many of his younger colleagues and Mr. L. G. Frost will have to look to his laurels if he is to retain the jockeys championship this
year.
The position at the head of the table of successful jockeys at the end of the first half year is as followe:-
Frost Heard

pony has quality and his owner de serve all the success that comes her way. It was a happy ides that led to the mount being given to ME Needa, who thus won the Hong Kong Derby on his first visit to the Colony, achieving what some Jockeys have failed to do after many years of racing Trentbridge won the highest total of stake money during the present term, earning for his owner no less than 87,439 in all. A comparison of the stakes won by the leaders in the various sections during 1933 may be of in- terest. The figures are as follows:
starter.
In all 72 subseription" griffins of this year were able to face the While races in this class `do not produce "A" Class times there is no doubt that they com mand the biggest following and from time to time return the best dividends to those who have been able to study theit form to a nicety. The disparity between the best and the worst sub is so big that a pony lika Racing Boy could win races in theB Class while others could Quot even find a place in "E" Class

The Australians.
Is it pure coincidence that the Kong Bros.' stable should house the champion for two years in succes- sion or is it due to good training? In the first year that Australian ponies raced here the stable drew Evening Star, one of the beat after Woodland Stag. In the following year, they had Polar Star, to say, nothing of Wotin, and Mermaid, and, this year they have Night Star, so far, the best Australian pony to race here, with a record of fire wins in fire outings The pony holds the milé and a quarter record, having registered 2 minutes 18,2 seconda. There were quite a number of good ponies in this year's batch of Australians' and those who subscribed for them, are, generally speaking, more than gratified. Perhaps a little more study of the methods of training Australiian ponies might bring satisfactory results to stables which have hitherto been less successful. That the Australian pony has come to stay is evidenced by the fact that when the subscription list closed for Australian ponies for the 1934 races, almost fifty were subscribed for. During the season under re- view no less than nineteen Aus- tralian griffins faced the starter while sixteen ponies of the 1931 and 1939 seasons were also sent to the post.
In addition to Night Star, än other pony, set a new record, this being Rosy Morn who returned 1.08.3 for the five furlongs sprint, Yet another pony tied with a former record, Portia equalling. Season Ticket's
time for six furlongs, Portia is a very good sprinter, and if she should meet Night Star in a short race in the Autumn, it will be worth going a long way, to see, and what is more, the chances are that she will win, Portia equalled Season Ticket's record while carry- ing as much as 170 pounds on the saddle!
Trentbridge (griffin) ---... $7,439, Liberty Bay (old pony)... 5,234 Night Star (Australian). 6,630 Warrington (aub of the
first batch)
3,862 National Day (2nd batch) 3,825
Another record. set in Australian It will be difficult to nominato races this season was that over the the next best griffin after Trent mile, when Polar Star came home bridge. Many will perhaps think in 1 minute 62.2 seconds to finish! that Jack. is the second best as he a length in front of"City" "of Bris In addition to the above, Mr. finished second in the Derby. Chara-bane. This was at the first extra Prost had a win at Macao (theng Star, Brechin and Cossack's meeting on March 4. Macao Derby, which he he won for Beauty however can be depended the second year in succession) while upon to give Jack a good race and Mr. Heard had five wins.
it will be interesting to see how these ponies fare during the autumn when the St. Leger comes round.

In spite of the fact that so many jockeys raced here there has been a dearth of jockeys and at times owners have had to sacrifice good mountą to comparatively inferior jockeys owing to their having left the question of getting riders until the last moment...
