ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN READJUSTMENT OF PIECEGOODS IMPORT TARIFF

SHANGHAI, June "4. There has been activity in the silk market during the week with increase in prices owing to demand from America: and- France. As regards piecegoods imports the week has been quiet as dealers are trying to get the new duties reduced. Great increase in the tariff duties have also resulted in business being neglected in the paper market...

PIECE GOODS.

The piced goods market during the past week has been extremely quiet as regards new business, dealers preferring to hold off from further buying until definite in- formation regarding the new tariff position is available. It is reported that the Chinese Piece Goods As- sociation is at present making representations to Nanking with a view to obtaining some, readjust ment of the new sale of duties and it is to be hoped that something can be done to bring some of the rates down to a more practicable Market prices

commercial level,

have advanced considerably since the publication of the new tariff rates and since the report of the agreement reached with the Japan. ese in the north.

-Stocks on the whole are light, and with the advance in cotton market prices would remain steady at the new lovci.

Clearances continue to be satis- factory, and during the week some heavy shipments of locally made greys and cotton yarn have been made to Tsingtao and Tientsin.

As regards woollens, little new business is being done, dealers being more interested in investiga ting the effects of the new tariffs than in the placing of further business.

Yuenfong Auctions. Thursday's "market at the Yuen- fong auction was more or less a repetition of that of the previous week, in that further substantial advances took place in values of most classes of dyed goods, while other classes which will shortly be $21.80 out of season averaged very little more than steady. Very keen speculation resulted in an apprecia- tion of about $1 per piece for Black Venetians and Black Itali ans, while velvete and coatings were also considerably higher, Grey shirtings were up 30 cents in sympathy with the hardening tendency of local production and white shirtings were about steady.

Clearances for the week under review have fallen off a little,

raise commodity price levels in general and wheat in particular, and further, the fact that European mills which did not believe in high or price possibilities and had kept on buying on a hand-to-mouth basis are now compelled to cover their requirements at the prices asked by the exporting countries. With America having decided to keep its wheat in the country, with Ri having turned from exporter to importer, with Danghian countries also being compelled to import in view of the 1932/3 crop having proved & failure, the entire world is now dependent on three countries, Canada, Australia and Argentina. The remarkable feature is the fact that none of these countries is actually a 'competitor of either of the others, because Canada is the only country producing high gluten. and strong wheat, Australia is dictating to world markets for soft wheat and the Argentine is the only exporting country which can supply world importers with the cheaper varieties. These facts explain in themselves the independent position which sach exporting country en joys this year, and also explains automatically the strong undertone for wheat prices in general,

Business in China has again been nil. Mills are continuing to digest previous purchases and continue to wait for native wheat to arrive. The Nanking government has tem- porarily increased the import duty ou four. The increased amount is approximately 20 cents, local cur- rency, a bag of 49 lb. It can be anticipated that four prices in Shanghai "will gradually advancë, and eventually reach a level at which it should again become pos sible for Chinese millers to use a mixture of native and foreign wheat and produce flour proft. abdy.
