A GREAT FUTURE PREDICTED

MR. F. LOVE'S ADDRESS TO LOCAL

ROTARY CLUB

Mr. Francis Love, President of the United Aircraft Export Corporation, was the speaker at the Rotary Club yesterday when there was a fairly large attendance to hear his address on “Avia- tion,"

Mr. Love predicted a great future for Hong Kong,as an air port. It was big view that Hong Kong will not be merely a "way- station but a fundamental base and a cross-road of important air nes in the East. He said that already many companies, inclnd. Ing Imperial Airways, K.L.M. and the Pan-American line are contemplating sending their planes to Hong Kong and he pre- dicted that in a year or two Hong Kong will be linked up with all the important air routes the world over. Shanghai will be a matter of four or five hours away and Macao should be a matter of ten minutes. He plctured the day when one could Hvs away from the heat of Hong Kong during the summer and yet come in to the Colony to carry on our dally vocations without any more trouble or expense than the owner of a motor car has today who lives some fifteen to twenty miles out of town.

"A BASE FOR WORLD'S AIRWAY'

will make a great deal of difference. With the enormous development in aircraft and, with the possibility of British, American, Dutch and pos sibly Chinese lines competing. this is bound to come..

To show you what this will mean to Hong Kong for every mau in the air, there will have to be ten or twelve men on the ground in the commercial office in the accounting office, on the fields, and godowns for the stocking of the spare parts and there will have to be hangars, etc.

At present, owing to the political situation in But China it is not permitted. there is no danger in the political sense in ordinary commercial flying since one military fighting plane is equivalent to twenty or thirty "com- mercial planes. If we had commer- cial flying here, it is worth while to get to the back of it.

MR. O. VAN SWERINGEN EXAMINED

(THROUGH REUTER'A AGENCY)

WASHINGTON, June 5. THE feature of the Senate in

vestigation of the Morgan Company's operations today was the examination of the well-known railway magnate, Mr. Oris Pax ton Van Sweringen.

Mr. Van Swaringen is the chair. man of the Board of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and he organis ed the Alleghany Securities Hold- ing Corporation in 1929.

The Alleghany stock has been the subject of much discussion dur ing the enquiry, it being alleged that the shares in the holding cor poration were obtained by Mar- gan's and passed on to favoured clients at cost price.

Questioned by Mr. Ferdinand Pecora, the counsel who is himself the subject of attack, Mr. Van Sweringen described Mr. J. P. Morgan's part in building up, the vast "Railway Empire," and said the Margan firm lest £5,200,000 in the years 1993 and 1924 to the Nickel

Plate Kailway and £9,000,000 in 1927 to the Chesapeake Corporation, which was formed by Mr. Yan Sweringen to purchase. control of the Chesapeake Chicago Railway.

I found the same old soap in the office, the same old clerk and the same old faces but other things have changed a great deal. For in- stance, you want me to say a few things about aviation. Well in 1900 aviation was not ever dreamed of., Great credit, I think, is due to Flight Commander Moss for the marvellous results in your aviation field. I have no doubt that Hong Kong will much sooner than you expect and perhaps in a few years only, by a cross road for the world's airway lines. Hong Kong is sure to be, not merely a way-station, but a principal and fundamental base. That means that Mr. Moss will have to have very much larger bangars
