The political situation goes from bad to worse. In January Wang Chia Lieh drove out the adherents of, former Dictator Mao Kuang Chiang. Some of the de- fested forced retreated into Yun- nan, some into Szechuan, some beld their position on the border of Hunan. Recently they have begun to crowd in on Wang's position in the centre of the province. There has been some fighting, hard to learn how severe, and. it looks as tho' the enemy are getting ready to make a hard drive for putting Wang' out of the province. Of course, they all pretend to be trus to the National party and obedient to its organization of government in Nan king. But the real authority of Nanking is at the zero point.

A foreigner is always getting surprises in this mysterious East. These peoples, so different in every way from Occidentals, reveal at times very exceptional powers and abilities and aptitudes.
