MISS DOWBIGGIN' WINS LADIES RACE

Four big dividends in a programme of six races was presented to punters yesterday at the Macao Races.

The opening event paid the biggest' dividend, Mias Dowbiggin winning with Gold Bridge from a field of seven. Whitehall sur- prised a field of six in the second race and Bold Lad came along with a nice dividend in the third, race and in the last evmt Just Imagine won to pay his supporters $43.60.

Mr. Chanson rodą two winners and was placed twice.

Outsider Again.

Yet another big dividend was paid out in the third race when Mr. Chanson brought home Bold Lad in front of Carnation II ridden by Mr. Heard, with New King third There was nothing in the inco. Kwangchow and So On werd left at the start and "were never in the picture. Carnation took the lead of the straight, but when chal- lenged by Bold Lad, failed to stand up to it. The winner paid $32.90.

Chanson's Second Win.

Bold General provided Chanson. with his second, win of the after-

noon, the pony coming home in a field of four, over five furlongs. Baguio was second and City of Can- ton third. The winner paid alightly more than even money.

A Close Tinish,

.Mr. Heard, riding Helter Skelter, won the fifth race over once round from Iron Grey, ridden Mr. G. U. da Roza by one length amidst great axcitement. The two ponies were held until the straight was reached when they put up a terrifio stragglo, Helter Skelter winning ultimately.. Flying Bay was third

SWATOW, April 30. Still more bankruptcies have taken place since my last letter and the financial situation is considered very critical. There has never been such a deplorable state of affairs within memory and ono wonders what is going to happen next,

The Chamber of Commerce is hold- ing frequent meetings to discuss the situation, and it is said that some kind of assistance is to be ren- dered by this body.

In Ampou

In Ampou, a town five miles away from Swatow by rail, a strike

is going on among owners of res taurants and small eating shops. The question at issue, is one of taxation. These houses refuse to tolerate the tax of 3 per cent. on

KEROSENE MERCHANTS

PROTEST AGAINST FOREIGN COMPETITION

Young Jok Po and other members of the Canton Kerosene temera Association have petitioned the Canton Authorities to the effect that the Asiatic Petroleum Com- pany and the other foreign concerna have established large factories for the refining of kerosene oil to be sold at low prices.

Recently, large quantities of yellow crude oil have been imported for the purpose.

They ask the Government to send deputies to investigate the doings, etc, of these factories, with a view to the uullification of such com- petitive refining rights
