HONG KONG, MAY 5, 1033.

AN OPPORTUNITY

ALL Kowloon residents' as well as visitors to the Mainland will be familiar with the piece of Crown land, at the corner of Nathan and Salisbury Roads and adjoining the Peninsula Hotel, which, for some mysterious reason has always remained vacant. Although it is, perhaps, one of the most valuable sites on the Mainland it has at no time been used for any more con- structive purposes than as a griz ing ground, a miniature golf course, ja playground, for Chinese boys," and for travelling circuses Former. to see ly it was quite usual military horses grazing there, but for the past two years the horses have been taken to other grassland. Circuses and golf courses invade the Colony only once in a while, to it would be absurd to keep the land free of buildings for the sake of the negligible profit to be obtained by renting it to amusement com- Danies. In any ense, a circus is hardly the sort of thing a first-class hotel enres to have under its very. windows and it is, perhaps, just a little unfair to residents of the Porality for the authorities to en- urage, for the sake of a few hun dred dollars, the blare and revelry which are the inseparable acconi- paniment of cirruses. From a pure y practical point of view, we can se neither rylume nor reason in a policy which refuses to build upon,

L--THE KOWLOON CRICKET CLUB

JADI

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

This is to be the first of a series of articles on the Clubs and sporting institutions in Kowloon, and as the premier Club of the Peninsula is the Kowloon Cricket Club, it is only filing that the opening article should deal with the K.0.0. and its activities.

It will be recalled that the opening of the now clubhouse (originally fixed for September 17, 1932) had to be postponed for a week on account of the typhoon which visited the Colony on that day, and since then, the K.0.0. has been going from strength to strength until to-day it is in a very healthy and cheerful posi-

The Hall is a very spaci ous one and is large enough to be, converted into a couple of badmin- ton courts if so desired.

There is also plenty of room on the verandah and from one of the quany comfortable chairs that are to be found on it. one can get, an excellent view of the games that may be in progress on the ground.

As in all other Clubs, the most popular place is perhaps the har. "up-to-date" affair This is a very and even at "Push hours" one can enjoy a glass of drink in the great- cat base and comfort.

Other Activities.

At lawn bowls, the club are also well represented and have taken part in the league for several years. They gained the highest honours in Club competitions by capturing the Senior Division shield in 1991; which was their first time, though of course they topped the league und kuxury and the fact that even table in the second division in 1926 members of the fastidious scx and 1927. or to offer for sale for building, wing is the last word in comfort one of the finest sites available, and at the same time does nothing to cultivate or devolop the land. In England during the War land that was not cultivated or used for building purposes was promptly cominandeered by order of the War Department, and we believe that when Crown land is purchased from the Hong Kong Government by ans tion, one condition that is laid down in the deed of sale is that the land must be developed within a specified period. It is a pity that the Cor- errment cannot be made to take its own medicine and either use this site for a constructive purpose or else transfer it to someone who will. The ordinary citizen is kept strictly in the dark where the aims and in tentions of the local Government are concerned, even if those aims will eventually involve a consider- able drain on the public purse. The Government has never given the slightest hint regarding its purpose. in keeping this site vacant; we may presume, however, that long ago, in the dim archives of the Legislative Council proceedings, or in the records of the P.W.D., it has been hinted that the land might be used for such-and-such a pur-

pose and that, like Mr.: Micawber,

the Government of today is still hoping that something may turn up to justify the scheme formulated in the distant past. On the other hand, it is not unlikely that pro sent officials have completely for gotten what the land was intended to be used for, but have blindly preserved the tradition that it need not be developed." If this latter surmise be correct, what an
