Nervous, strain and fatigue were again the chief obstacles in the stop-and-restart teat. The chosen Thill, with a gradient of about 1 in 6, had been larred and gritted, and should have presented no difficulty to any of the competing cars. But drivers were tired and nervy, hand- brakes proved unexpectedly weak, and the swell of burnt-out clutches. became nearly as unpleasant as the pitiless, driving rain.

Average times for this. were Class 1 (over 18 h.p.), 111 sec., Clans 9 (over 10 h.p. and up to 16 h.p.), 12.4/5-sec., and Class 3 (up to 10 h.p.), 11.4/5 sec., an interesting result, showing how well the smaller cars can perform in an event of this sort. Fast tines were recorded in all three classes, ten cars doing, the test in under nine seconds. Mr. Weston's Rover (Class 1) put up the best time, 7.4/5, and Mrs. Chetwynd's Ford (Class 1), Mies Brunell' A.C., Mr. Anthony's Aston-Martin (Class 2), Mr. Hall's Singer and Mr. Dennison's Riley (Class 3) all achieved 5.2/5 sec.

Spectators were disappointed when the coachwork competition was held in the magnificent but chilly municipal garage under the promenade, but the really fine diş- play of new cars delighted every one. This year there seemed to be no old or even middle-aged cars at all.
