AMAZING GOLF BY ALLAN DAILEY

53 HOLES WITHOUT LOSS

PROFESSIONALS FAIL TO GIVE AMATEURS BIG HANDICAP

By Gronor GREENWOOD

(Special Air-Mall Service)

London, April 1. Allan Dailey, the young hero of che Roehampton tournament, was aturally the centre of attraction b. the match between many of the eading British amateure and the ominees of the Ryder Cup team on the new course at Addington westerday.

With the idea of putting the pro fessionals on their mettle it was should that.

handi- terrifie thirty-six, 21 cap to be sure, and, as it turned out, just beyond the capacity of Dailey. Promoted to leading plaça In the team, an honour he worthily upheld. Dailey was beaten by T. A Torrance, the British Walker Cap captain, at the thirty-sixth hold after one of the most interest. ing struggles I have witnessed for Some lite

There are few professionals; Bri- Lish or American, who ran concede succefully five holes in two rounds to Torrance, one of the stendiest and most experienced players in the amateur ranks. But Dailey nearly did it, the match being all last: hole (435 square with the yards) to play.

Jutting well out on to the fair- way about 230 yards up the course on the right is a bunker which is the key to the hole. Dailey's drive after the first bource pitched straight into the hazard, whence he attempted to reach the green with a brek-or-nothing iron shot, the only thing left open to him in order to save the match. It was a brave effort, the ball falling 40 yards short of the green. The run- up shot was five yards wide and the butt which everybody hoped and expected he would hole was missed by no more than an inch.

A Fine Chip Shot.

I am bound to say that a halved match would have been a more equitable result, for Torrance's iran shot to the green, badly push ed out, was only saved from top pling into the bunker by a tuft of grass. It is true that he played a beautiful chip to the holeside, but

I cannot get rid of the impression that Torrance was a little lucky to win the hole for the match.

ing a hole. This is an achievement which, I think, has no parallel in golf. The sequence came. end, as it had to do some time, at the tenth, where Dailey was un- favourably placed for the second shot, and his putt failed to drop.

WAS

"The best putter I have ever Torrance's coinment Bean," after he had watched Dailey per form in the opening stages of the match.

Dailey was not on the first green i with his second shot, but he pitch- ed four yards from the fing and holed the putt. He ran down a similar sort of putt at the third for a 3, rammed in one of six yards for a 4 at the sixth, and followed with three successive 3's. This was stupendous: but could it last?

The putting certainly did for the remainder of the round, for in the homeward Half Dailey took 14 & total of twenty-seven, pults, which compares with Bobby Jones's twenty-eight putts during his re card round of 68 at St. Andrews.

Dailey would have had a remark- able score but for the fact that he erashed at two holes. At the thir-

th, his drive was in the rough, and the second shot in the woods. This cost him a 7, which was fol lowed with a 6 at the sixteenth, where he was bunkered right of the green, and lo and ended by taking three behold!

For the first time for days putts. the putter had failed him..
