MISS LYDIA MICHEL
German Vocalist's Visit
to Hong Kong
Miss Lydia Michel, the well- known German singer who is giving
concert at the Hong Kong Hotel Roof Garden on Thursday next, is upupil of three of the foremost teachers of voice in tho world. Professor 1ffert, Lilli Lohman, and the eminent Italian baritone Lattia Battistini. Miss Michel has met.
with great success in Manila and one of the local papers writing of her concert at the German Club
ays
A select and appreciative,audi- ence gave Misa Lydia Michel, Ger man mezzo-soprano, a big hand at her concert sponsored by the Asso- ciation Musical de Filipinas at the German Club at Manila last night.
Miss Michel selected for her pieces gay and delightful songs by such beloved composers as Schu bent, Brahms and Richard Strauss, which revealed her lyrical powers, and an air from Samson and her most naibitious undertaking of Delila" by Saint-Saens which was the evening.
The German singer was particu- larly delightful in Strauss Drenni in the Twilight" and "The Lovers' Pledge," which brought out the rich quality of her voice, and her artistic sensitiveness.
The second part of the pro gramme consisted in an air from
Samson and Delila" which Miss Michel sung with such sympathetic understanding that it was warnly applauded again and again by the audience.
But Miss Michel was never more at home than in her concluding number of German folksongs. Like ORC reminiscing, Misa Michel right forth the old rural spirit of her native country, laughed with the audience, and carried then, with the simplicity and beauty of her theones.
The concert last night reveals Miss Michel to be a singer of great ability, her voice has warmth, rich- ness, and tonal colouring; she was emotionally sincere and earnest,
Alexander Lippay, director of the Academy of Music, who accom panied her, guve just the right touch of distinction to her pro- gramme,
