FASHION goes HIGH HAT

PARIS is having a laugh, not up

her sleeve, but under her bon-, net. It is all to do with that top most point of fashion.

Hats are going heaven high. At show after show I looked and won

dunce's dered. There were

CAP blatantly point, mitres, and peaks.

What little brims there were on

the high caps swept down over the right side-front to soften the face line, narrowed off at the sides or curved up to the back, where they merged with the crown and struck a high note of interest with a Hat group of flowers a tailored bow, or severe fenthered mounts,

Trimmings are back in favour, but schooled to a modern austeri- ty. This season, more than ever, "the line's the thing."

It was a relief to find that many of the new models compromised happily between the extremes of high and low.

.

"Patillion" perfect example of this compromise was shown by Jeff, the young London hat de- signer. It is a cotton straw look ing almost like very fine crochet, its inchwide brim rolled up jsun tily at the sides, and the flat. square crown unusually built up an inch or so higher at the back.

*

Broad peteraham ribbons, in crimson and yellow, banded the crown in the traditional "coach- man" style and boldly contrasted with the dark navy of the straw.

Mixtures of materials and colours aro going to be very popular this season. Felt and angora, wool and straw, satin and felt, are a few of the "happy marriages."

Que of the moderately high capa was plaited quits boldly in strips of dark, brown Felt and strands of Angora wool in a light stone. The microscopic brin coiled up from the right eyebrow, round the crown, and finished in An upstanding whorl, poised on the top of the

drown.

Another model in this collection charmingly introduces the heaven- wards line. "Winga," a delightful down-in-front-up-at-back affair, has the shine of glacé straw gleaming. through a fluff of woven-in angora of the same colour, and the wings of self material peeking saucily over the crown from the back.."

Ascot demands the new picture hat, and several of the most at- tractive were gigantic sailors. One in black Baku straw flaunted an airy bow of white organdie, poised dead centre-front of a little square crown, the organdie reappearing as a "tatting-net" to cover the hair at the back under the uptilt.

On the whole it is a milliners' are "clever," with season. Hats much fine work and intricate detail used to enhance the simple lines.

Designers have seized joyously

fabric. Moirés, satins, and even newer versions of the stamped and bubbled crapella crepes are be- ingnised to express their art. Some houses are weaving and de- signing an individual crepe exclu-

sive to themselves,

Hair comes very much into the picture at the side and back of the up-tilt wearing angle, and imma- culate dressing is a necessity to show off the new models.

"MYSTERY"!

A London designer. shown by Crinkly materials are waxed es pecially for him, and look like wrinkled highly polished leather. And they are nameless.

WASP "is the well-chosen name of a bright yellow jersey. with fine nigger stripes. It has a white collar and brown skirt.

*

STRAW-black, shiny and sup ple-is used for pockets and a single armlet on a navy blue day frock. It loaks unusual and at- tractive.

KIMONO frocks are presented in many collections. They may be in silk or wool, patterned or plain, but they are all marvellously "alimming."

PLUS FOURS in silk were worn with a knitted cotton pullover in bold brown and white stripes. A bright yellow jacket completed the outfit.

*

TAPESTRY seems to make an evening coat. But it turns out to black muslin stitched över white cashmere vividly patterned with red flowers and green leaves. The "veil" of black muslin softens the colours and gives a "tapestry" effect.

*

STUDS-real dog-collar" ones -are used to trim the hem of a dall silver lamé evening skirt, The top is handknitted in light silver thread. Another "bright thought of the clever Russian de- signer who made the "tapestry' cont described above,

"PARSLEY POTATOES"

Bake the required number“ of large potatoes in their jackets.

When soft, cut carefully in half and remove the potato into a large basin. Mix to- gether with a little milk, butter, pinch of salt, and finely chopped parsley.

Refill the potato jackets with this mixture, join the halves together, and return to a moderate oven to heat through. A useful dish for a cold meat day:
