THE VERDICT. IN THE” MOSCOW TRIAL" WHICH WAS EAGERLY AWAITED ALL OVER THE WORLD WAS ANNOUNCED SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT WHEN IT WAS STATED THAT ALL THE ACCUSED WITH THE EXCEPȚION OF MR. A. W. GREGORY WERE FOUND GUILTY,
THE JUDGES RE-ASSEMBLED AT 12.55 A.M. (MOSCOW TIME) AND AS M. ULRICH DELIVERED HIS. SPEECH IN UNHURRIED, EVEN TONES, THE WHOLE COURT ROSE AND REMAINED STANDING. THE SPEECH CONSISTED
· LARGELY OF A RECAPITULATION OF THE EVIDENCE, BUT THE PRESIDING JUDGE CONTENDED THAT THORN- TON WAS THE CHIEF INSTIGATOR OF THE CRIMES COMMITTED AND THAT MONKHOUSE WAS CONCERNED WITH HIM. A DEATHLIKE SILENCE MARKED THE CLOSE OF THE SPEECH. THE Pprisoners STOOD WITH BATED BREATH IN THE SAME PLACES THEY OCCUPIED DURING THE WHOLE TRIAL.
MR. C. I. THORNTON WAS SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS' IMPRISONMENT AND MR. WILLIAM MACDONALD TO TWO YEARS' IMPRISONMENT.
MESSRS, MONKHOUSE. NORDWALL AND CUSHNY WERE SENTENCED TO EXPULSION FROM RUSSIA, WHILE GREGORY WAS ACQUITTED.
